Description

Co-Cyprindiol is a medication used to treat acne which has not responded to antibiotics. It is the generic version of Dianette, and contains the same active constituents. In addition to relieving acne, it is also adept at reducing excess hair growth, and its hormonal qualities also provide contraceptive cover. This pill should not, however, be relied upon as a sole contraceptive measure. It is recommended that users employ a barrier method in addition. You can only buy Co-Cyprindiol in the UK on prescription, and it is only suitable for women.

  1. Treats cases resistant to antibiotics
  2. Also acts as a contraceptive
  3. Also effective at reducing excess hair growth

Acne is a condition defined by the appearance of spots on the skin. These can vary in their size and severity. Blackheads and whiteheads tend not to be smaller, and not as serious; whereas larger spots or pustules may be more noticeable. They can appear just about anywhere on the skin, but are more likely to develop on the face, back, shoulders or chest. The most severe forms of acne are nodules or cysts, which are large, painful, and can leave behind scars.

It is thought that most people will develop acne in some form at least once in their lives. The condition is more common in persons between the ages of 14 and 18, but most cases will diminish in severity with age, before disappearing. Some cases of teenage acne may carry over into adulthood and recur intermittently, but this is rare.

When acne occurs in adult women, it may be a sign of a hormonal imbalance. Some women, for instance, may be more prone to acne when expecting their period. For others, it may develop during the early stages of pregnancy. Spots occur when the follicles in the skin become blocked with a substance called sebum. This is generated by sebaceous glands, and helps to keep the skin and hair healthy. However, a high level of androgens can cause these glands to produce too much sebum, leading to blocked pores, and acne.

Co-Cyprindiol is a combination treatment containing two hormones, cyproterone and ethinylestradiol. As a synthetic form of progesterone, cyproterone reduces the amount of androgens in the body, thus decreasing their effect on the sebaceous glands. Ethinylestradiol, an oestrogen-derivative, is also supplied in addition to provide hormonal balance.

  6. Swallow your tablet whole with a glass of water.
  7. The 21-day pill is taken for the first three weeks of the menstrual cycle, followed by seven pill free days. Administration commences again the following day for three weeks, and so on.
