How does Atarax treat anxiety?
Anxiety is a potentially serious health condition that can lead to major physical and mental health problems. Although we all feel some level of anxiety in our lives, particularly before an event such as a job interview or medical examination, for some it can be an ongoing (chronic) problem that affects their day to day life, with no specific trigger.
Anxiety disorders can include panic disorders (such as panic attacks), phobias (such as agoraphobia - the fear of going outside), PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder, which occurs after distressing events) and social anxiety disorder (the fear of social situations). Generalised anxiety disorder presents symptoms such as heart palpitations, dizziness, constantly feeling worried and restlessness. There are many treatments available for those with anxiety disorders, including antidepressants and talking therapies. If the condition is moderate to severe, a combination of the two is found to be most effective.

Can Atarax help my eczema?
Eczema is a skin condition that comes in many forms, the most common of which is atopic eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis. The condition usually presents in childhood and can improve through adolescence. It is often a long-term condition but it can first present in adulthood in a minority of cases.
The symptoms of atopic eczema include dry and flaky skin that is often cracked, itchy and sore. It can occur in small areas for some but all over for others. The most common areas of the body affected are the elbows, face, scalp and the backs of knees. Outbreaks usually occur as flare ups, with barely noticeable signs of the condition the rest of the time.
There is no cure for atopic eczema, but it can be well managed with use of emollients (moisturisers) and topical steroids, which reduce inflammation and itchiness. Atarax works to regulate the body’s allergic reaction and reduce eczema symptoms.
Atarax to treat a common skin rash
Urticaria, also referred to as nettle rash, is a common rash with one in five people experiencing it at some point in their lives. It can present in any area of the body with highly irritated and itchy skin across an area that ranges from a few millimetres to about the size of a grapefruit.
There are two types of urticaria, the most common being acute, where the rash will clear up within a matter of a few days or up to six weeks. In rarer circumstances, chronic urticaria can last well beyond this time frame, leading to years of the rash being constantly present. Antihistamines, such as Atarax, can help reduce the symptoms greatly if the outbreak is severe. In rare cases, oral corticosteroids and treatment at a dermatologist will be required.

Histamine is a substance that helps increase blood flow to the affected part of the body, but it also produces other chemical reactions that can lead to the allergic effects described above. Atarax works by blocking histamine receptors in the body, which are released when an allergic reaction occurs. Hydroxyzine hydrochloride can also be prescribed to treat anxiety because it can have a sedative effect on the brain and therefore reduce anxiety symptoms.
