Nasacort nasal spray is manufactured by Sanofi and is a corticosteroid that uses the active ingredient triamcinolone acetonide. The spray is usually applied twice into each nostril once a day to reduce the inflammation associated with an allergic reaction.
- Easily-administered nasal spray
- Effective relief from allergic rhinitis
- Ideal for those who don’t like pills
Nasacort provides effective relief for those with seasonal and year-round nasal allergies. Seasonal allergic rhinitis, commonly known as hay fever, is where the body recognises pollen from trees, plants and weeds as potential threats or allergens. Whereas perennial allergic rhinitis can be caused by allergens throughout the year; such as dust mites and animal dander. Both types of allergies cause unpleasant symptoms. Each time the body comes into contact with the allergen it tries to fight it as though it is fighting an infection, by producing high numbers of antibodies. This can make the affected person feel as though they have a common cold with symptoms such as sneezing, itching and a runny or blocked nose.
Allergic rhinitis is thought to affect around 20 per cent of the UK’s population. Anyone can contract the condition regardless of age or gender. There is no cure for nasal allergies, although some people may experience slight improvement over time, it is unlikely that the problem will completely resolve. Once you establish that you have an allergy you should try, where possible, to avoid the allergen that triggers your symptoms. This is not always an easy option and you may need to regularly rinse your nose with a saltwater solution to flush out any allergens caught in the passages.
Corticosteroids such as Nasacort are available to treat more severe rhinitis symptoms. The active ingredient triamcinolone acetonide reduces inflammation in the nasal passages. The cells in the nose absorb the medication preventing the release of chemicals that usually cause the allergic reaction; thus avoiding the unwanted symptoms. The spray can take around three days to become effective and should be administered routinely whilst the allergen is still present.

How to use Nasacort
You should use your medication as instructed by your doctor. If you have any questions or concerns you should check with your doctor or pharmacist before commencing treatment.
- Use only in the nose.
- Before application, gently blow your nose to clear the nasal passages.
- Prepare the bottle for use by removing the blue cover and blue plastic clip. Shake the bottle gently.
- When using the spray for the first time you should hold the bottle upright, pointing away from you, and press and release the pump five times. Once a fine mist appears, the product is ready for use.
- Close one nostril with your finger.
- With the bottle held upright you should put the nozzle in the other nostril, as far as is comfortable.
- Close your mouth and breathe in gently through your nose.
- At the same time, you should press the pump to release a spray into your nose.
- Breathe out through your mouth.
- If you have been instructed to issue more than one spray to each nostril you should repeat the process again.
- Keep the nozzle clean by wiping it carefully with a clean tissue.
- Replace the blue clip and cap in order to prevent the spray from accidentally releasing.
