Product information

Terbinafine cream is a topical antifungal used to combat a number of fungal infections, such as athlete’s foot, jock itch and ringworm, it is the licensed generic of a medication called lamisil. You can purchase terbinafine cream online through our GPhC-regulated pharmacy.

Fungal skin infections such as athlete’s foot (tinea pedis), jock itch (tinea cruris) and ringworm (tinea corporis) are quite common. They can occur when the natural balance of the skin is upset or infiltrated by a fungus. The presence of the dermatophyte fungus can cause unpleasant symptoms.

On the feet it can lead to athlete’s foot causing an itchy rash usually seen between the toes. On the body it can cause ringworm. The condition’s name refers to the circular shaped rash found on the skin. It often appears as a red or silver colour and can be raised and inflamed. When the condition is located on the inner thighs and buttocks it is referred to as jock itch. Athlete’s foot, jock itch and ringworm can all cause itching.

Fungal skin conditions, such as ringworm and athlete’s foot, are not usually serious. However, it is important to get them treated as soon as possible because doing so can help prevent the spread of the infection to other more vulnerable people. Fungal infections can be transmitted through close contact. Fungi can appear on the skin in large numbers and begin to cause problems if the environment is well suited to the fungus.

Treatment tends to come in the form of topical medications. However, more stubborn or serious cases may require oral tablets. A thin layer of the cream is usually applied one or two times a day for up to two weeks depending on the location of the infection. Terbinafine disrupts fungal cell formation so that the cells become unstable and are killed off. This allows for the normal skin environment to re-established.

You can reduce your chances of contracting a fungal skin infection by observing a consistent hygiene regime. Avoid sharing towels, socks or bedding and make sure your skin is thoroughly dry after washing. Where possible use footwear in communal bathing areas.
