Constipation is a condition identified by an inability to regularly and comfortably pass stools. It can be caused by a number of dietary or health factors.
- Likely to affect everyone at least once
- Can result in pain when going to the toilet
- Simple to treat with prescription medication
There are some conditions which can be challenging to speak to a doctor about in person. We’ve developed our confidential online service to enable people to get discreet and speedy access to the treatment they need.
Constipation is a common condition. It is thought that everyone will experience the condition at least once throughout their lives. The best way to define constipation is as a significant drop in bowel frequency; meaning that someone with it will go to the toilet to pass a stool much less frequently than they normally do.
In addition to the above, someone who is constipated may also find that their stools become hard and dry, as a result of their increased exposure to water-absorption in the bowel. Feelings of discomfort in the gut may also be present, and it may be harder and require more strain when on the toilet to pass a stool.
There are several reasons why constipation may develop. It may be due to a lack of fibre in someone’s diet, or a lack of sufficient fluid intake. Sometimes the condition may arise from using certain types of medication, or be the result of another condition, such as irritable bowel syndrome, also known as IBS. On occasion, it can also be caused by a factor in a person’s life which they might not expect, such as stress.
How the condition is treated depends on how severe the symptoms are, and what might be causing them. Milder cases of constipation may pass without the need for intervention, or be averted by simply reducing stress, increasing fibre intake, and drinking more fluids. Eating regularly may also help a person to get into a more predictable toilet routine.
More serious cases of constipation, however, may require treatment. If severe symptoms are allowed to develop, then complications such as faecal impaction can occur, or haemorrhoids. Faecal impaction is a condition where small hard bits of stool collect in the rectum, and obstruct the back passage. In cases of IBS, not addressing symptoms can cause further strain in the bowel and constipation may get worse.
For chronic or more severe cases of acute constipation, or faecal impaction, a doctor may choose to prescribe a treatment such as Movicol. This is a powder, which is mixed with water and swallowed by the patient. It works by retaining and drawing water in the bowel, softening the stool and increasing its size. This stimulates expulsion and makes the stool easier to pass. In addition to macrogol, the active ingredient which performs this function, the treatment also contains sodium and potassium, which supplements any of these salts lost through loosened stools.
Our other product, Fybogel Mebeverine is not suitable for those experiencing faecal impaction. This item is instead intended for those undergoing a bout of constipation which may be caused by irritable bowel syndrome. In this medication are two agents, called ispaghula husk and mebeverine hydrochloride. A type of laxative, ispaghula husk encourages the passing of stools by supplementing their fibre content. This increases stools in size and prompts the bowel to push them out. Mebeverine works by relaxing the muscle walls in the bowel, and this stops painful contractions, and also eases the passing of stool.

Types of Treatment
Milder cases of constipation can sometimes be offset by carrying out a few simple lifestyle changes. Those who tend not to drink enough fluids will usually be advised by a doctor to drink more, and those who do not eat enough fibre will be encouraged to amend their diet accordingly. Undertaking light exercise can also help to ease symptoms.
In more serious cases, a programme of treatment may be required to provide relief. Which medication is issued will depend on the nature of symptoms and the probable cause.
Here at Treated.com, we offer two products for constipation, which are for quite different scenarios. Movicol and Fybogel Mebeverine are both laxative powder preparations, designed to be mixed with water and taken orally, and are only available to buy from our online pharmacy with a prescription.
Movicol is for severe acute or chronic constipation, and faecal impaction.
The other product, Fybogel Mebeverine, is mostly used for constipation caused by IBS. It is not suitable for faecal impaction cases.
How do they work?
The active ingredient in Movicol is macrogol, which helps to pull water into the gut, and also helps to prevent the gut from losing water. This both helps to soften hard stool, and increases the size of the stool; which in turn encourages it to be passed out of the bowel.
Fybogel Mebeverine contains two agents. The first of these is a fibre, which adds mass to stools in the bowel and prompts the muscles in the region to react, by pushing the stool out. The second agent works by soothing tension in muscles in the gut, and this stops the contractions associated with IBS which can cause pain and discomfort.
What are the side effects?
The most common side effects of these products are flatulence, and increased movement in the gut. However, these will tend to pass within a short time. Consult the product pages for more information.
Can I take them with other medications?
It depends on which treatments you are taking. Let your doctor know if you are using any other medicinal products, as their uptake and function may be affected by the use of laxatives.
What’s the difference between the medications?
Both are powder treatments designed to be mixed with water and taken by mouth. However, Movicol is used for cases of constipation and faecal impaction; whereas Fybogel Mebeverine is prescribed for constipation related to IBS.
Should I take Movicol or Fybogel Mebeverine?
It depends on what is causing your symptoms. Those who have long-term constipation which isn’t related to another condition may be advised to use Movicol.
On the other hand, those who are living with IBS and need medication to relieve constipation symptoms should use Fybogel Mebeverine.
This treatment is not advised for those experiencing IBS symptoms for the first time. in such cases consultation with a doctor is recommended, as they may need to refer the patient to a dietician for further help.
Are there different side effects?
They may differ slightly, but the most common side effects across both products are flatulence and increased activity in the gut and stomach.
