Femodette is a hormonal contraceptive pill, manufactured and marketed for sale in the UK by Bayer. It consists of two synthetic hormones, gestodene and ethinylestradiol, which mimic the action of progesterone and oestrogen. This product is a 21-day pill, meaning that it is taken daily for the first three consecutive weeks of a menstrual cycle, followed by a period of seven pill-free days. Treatment is commenced again the following week and so on.

To prepare itself for pregnancy, the female reproductive system each month goes through a certain sequence of actions. One of these is ovulation, and this involves the production of an egg (or ova) from the ovary, after which it is ready for insemination by male sperm. Meanwhile, in the uterus, the lining of the uterine wall builds up so that it can accept implantation from a fertilised egg and harbour its development.
Hormones manage these processes. When levels of progesterone and oestrogen fall, the ovary generates an egg. In contraception, synthetic versions of these hormones work to convince the body that this process has already taken place and does not need to occur again. This prevents ovulation, and changes the consistency of the uterine wall so that it cannot accept egg implantation.
In addition to these measures, the man-made hormones in Femodette, gestodene and ethinylestradiol, also reduce the likelihood of conception by thickening cervical fluid, thereby making it harder for sperm to get through to an egg.

How to use Femodette
When using the pill, it is important to follow the guidelines your prescribing doctor has issued, and also to read the instructions carefully. This will help to ensure that that it is as effective as possible, and limit the risk of possible side effects.
- Administer as directed.
- This will be one pill per day, taken at the same time, for 21 days consecutively.
- After this, you will have a seven day rest period.
- You will then begin taking the pill again at the beginning of the next four-weekly cycle, and repeat the process.
- Consult the leaflet for guidance on when to start taking it. If you are not switching from another pill, then this may be on the first day of your period.
- Use the markings and arrows on the strip to help you.
- If you miss a pill, consult the leaflet for advice on what to do next, and if you are still unsure, ask your doctor or family planning nurse.
