Marvelon is a combined birth control pill. This means that it contains two synthetic hormones which work together to prevent pregnancy. Marketed by Merck Sharp and Dohme, the product is also adept at relieving heavy menstrual bleeding. It is a simple one-pill-per-day treatment, which is applied for 21 continuous days out of every four-week period.
- One a day pill
- 99% effective
- Also helpful for reducing heavy periods
Every month, the female reproductive system goes through various phases, which prepare the body for pregnancy. Ovulation is the process by which the ovary produces and releases an egg into the fallopian tube, where it makes its journey to the uterus. During this time, the egg is ready to be fertilised by male sperm.
Once the egg reaches the uterus after being fertilised, it implants on the endometrium and starts to grow into an embryo. When the egg is not fertilised, it disintegrates in the uterus and is discharged, along with the lining of the womb, through periodic bleeding.
The process of ovulation is managed by a hormone, called progesterone. Oestrogen, another natural hormone, regulates the shedding of the endometrium. The active agents in Marvelon, ethinylestradiol and desogestrel, work by emulating the function of these hormones.
Their presence convinces the body that ovulation has already occurred, and this both stops the release of an egg from the ovary, and makes the lining of the uterus less receptive to egg implantation. These synthetic hormones also help to thicken the fluid in the vagina, and this makes it harder for sperm to travel and do its job.
Combined contraceptive pills are a popular choice for many sexually active couples, because they’re easy to apply, 99% effective, and don’t interrupt sexual intercourse.
