Millinette is a combined oral birth control pill manufactured by Gedeon Richter. It is a generic version of the pill called Femodette which is made by Bayer, and contains the same active constituents. These are gestodene, a synthetic version of progesterone; and ethinylestradiol, a man-made kind of oestrogen.

  1. Generic version of Femodette
  2. Prevents pregnancy in 99% of cases
  3. Lighter dose available

Every month, the body gets ready to conceive in a number of ways. A key factor in this process is ovulation, which is managed by the hormones progesterone and oestrogen. Ovulation is characterised by the production and release of an egg into the fallopian tube. Here, it is ready to be fertilised by sperm, and begins its journey towards the uterus.

Inside the uterus, the fertilised egg attaches to the uterine wall (or endometrium) and begins its growth into an embryo. The build up of the lining of the uterine wall, so that it is ready to receive implantation, is managed by oestrogen; and its shedding is regulated by progesterone.

In those instances where an egg is not inseminated, it disintegrates once it reaches the uterus, and is discharged along with the endometrial lining through regular menstrual bleeding. Combined hormonal contraception counteracts these processes by convincing the body that they have already occurred.

So, when the body thinks that ovulation has already taken place, due to the presence of the synthetic hormones in Millinette, an egg is not produced. Similarly, the lining of the uterine wall is adjusted so that it cannot receive an egg and harbour its development. The fluid inside the cervix is also thickened by these hormones, so that sperm cannot travel around as easily.

How to use Millinette

Always make sure you follow the directions your prescriber has issued you with, and read the instructions in the patient information leaflet fully prior to use. This will help you to get the highest possible effectiveness out of your medicine, while also limiting the likelihood of side effects.

  1. Apply the treatment as prescribed by your doctor.
  2. This will usually be one tablet per day, taken at the same time each day.
  3. Millinette is a 21-day pill, meaning that it is taken for the first three weeks of the menstrual cycle, and is followed by seven days where the user takes no pill.
  4. This process is then repeated the following month.
  5. Swallow tablets whole with water.
  6. If you miss a dose, refer to the guidelines in the patient information leaflet for advice on what you should do next.
  7. Guidance on the best day to start taking this pill can also be found in the leaflet supplied.

These directions do not constitute detailed instructions. Refer to those supplied with the medicine prior to and during use.
