Norinyl-1 is a hormonal birth control tablet marketed in the UK by Pharmacia. It prevents pregnancy by convincing the body that it does not need to ready itself for conception, through the induction into the body of supplementary versions of progesterone and oestrogen. As a combined pill, it is taken once a day for the first three out of every four weeks of the user’s menstrual cycle. To be effective, it should be taken at the same time each day.
- Rate of effectiveness is 99%
- Can relieve menstrual bleeding
- Easy-to-use pill
In preparing itself for pregnancy, the body must go through a series of procedures. These are regulated by the hormones, progesterone and oestrogen. One such procedure is ovulation, which involves the release of an egg from the ovary, into the fallopian tube. It then journeys to the uterus, and is ready to be fertilised by male sperm during the course of this movement. After it has arrived at the uterus, the fertilised egg will attach itself to the uterine wall, or endometrium, before beginning the next stage of its development.
The layering up and breaking down of the uterine wall lining is another task the body performs which is managed by hormones. At a certain point each month, this wall is receptive to implantation from an egg, before the consistency of it breaks down and it is shed through periodic bleeding.
Contained in Norinyl-1 are synthetic versions of each of these hormones. They are called mestranol and norethisterone, and by establishing a presence in the body, they effectively convince the reproductive system that pregnancy has already begun, even though it has not. This prevents the ovary from releasing an egg ready for fertilisation, and makes the quality of the uterine wall lining less receptive to harboring an egg. Another function these synthetic hormones perform is to increase the density of vaginal fluid. This makes the cervix harder for sperm to traverse.
