A biological series of events take place inside the female body each month in order to prepare it for pregnancy. The most significant event in this process is ovulation, whereby the ovary produces an egg. When this egg is freed into the womb, it travels along the fallopian tubes to the uterus. If it is not inseminated by sperm, it breaks down when it arrives at the uterus, and is discharged with the lining of the womb during menstruation.
However, in cases where the egg is successfully penetrated by sperm, it then attaches to the uterine wall and progresses to the embryonic stage, eventually developing into a baby. Progesterone is the hormone responsible for the management of ovulation, while oestrogen regulates the shedding of the uterine wall (endometrium) each month.
The synthetic versions of these in Qlaira are called estradiol (oestrogen) and dienogest (progesterone), and their presence helps to persuade the body that ovulation has already happened and does not need to take place. This results in the production and release of eggs ceasing, and the quality of the endometrium being adjusted so that it cannot receive an egg. Sperm motility is also slowed down by these agents, through the thickening of vaginal mucus.
