Rigevidon is a contraceptive treatment distributed in the UK by Consilient. It is a combined hormonal birth control tablet, in that it contains versions of the hormones progesterone and oestrogen. The man-made hormones in this pill work by persuading the body to forego its usual preparations for pregnancy.

  1. Can relieve menstrual cramps
  2. 99% success rate
  3. Easy to take 21-day medication

The process of menstruation is regulated by progesterone and oestrogen, and the rising and falling levels of these hormones play a vital role in how body makes itself more receptive to becoming pregnant each month. Firstly, progesterone determines when ovulation begins. This is the means by which the female reproductive system releases an egg ripe to be inseminated by male sperm.

Oestrogen is important in the building up the uterine wall lining. This lining is required by a fertilised egg when it reaches the uterus, because it makes it easier for the egg to implant and begin its growth into an embryo. The lining of this wall is shed periodically, resulting in menstrual bleeding, and this process, again, is instigated by progesterone at a certain time every month.

What the agents in Rigevidon do is supplement the levels of these hormones as they decrease. Their presence convinces the body that ovulation has already happened, and this tricks it into stopping the release of an egg; and alters the quality of the uterine wall (or endometrial) lining, so that it is not as receptive to an egg after fertilisation.

These synthetic hormones perform an added function, in that they increase the density of vaginal mucus, making it harder for sperm to pass through the cervix on their way to an egg.

How to use Rigevidon

Follow the instructions your doctors issues you with when using this pill, and adhere to the directions found in the patient information leaflet. This will help to make sure that the medication is as effective as it can be, and limit the potential occurrence of side effects.

  1. Take as prescribed.
  2. In the majority of cases, this will be a course of one pill per day, started on the first day of your period.
  3. Continue to take the pill at the same time each day for a total of 21 days.
  4. Then have seven pill-free days, before beginning again.
  5. Repeat this process each month.
  6. The strip containing the tablets will be marked with arrows and days of the week to help you.
  7. You may be advised to start taking this treatment on a different day of the month if you have switched from another treatment or have recently been pregnant.
  8. Do not exceed the dose prescribed.
  9. If you forget to take your pill, do not take two at the same time. Consult the leaflet for advice, and if you still need help, speak to your doctor or family planning nurse.

These directions are only intended as a guide. They do not constitute detailed instructions. You can find these in the leaflet supplied with the medication.
