Noriday is a single hormone contraceptive pill manufactured by Pfizer. It belongs to a category of products called minipills, and contains a synthetic version of progesterone, called norethisterone. This helps to prevent pregnancy by altering the regular menstrual processes in the body. Noriday is only available to buy in the UK with a prescription.
- One a day use
- Highly effective at preventing pregnancy
- Single hormone pill
Several conditions need to be present in the womb for conception to be successful. Each month, the body goes through a process called ovulation, in order to optimise these conditions. This is where the ovary releases an egg ready to be fertilised by male sperm. Once it is fertilised, it attaches to the uterine wall and grows into a foetus. If it is not fertilised, the egg simply breaks down in the womb and is expelled during menstruation.
Contraceptive pills work by interfering with the process of ovulation. They do this by supplementing hormone levels and essentially tricking the body into thinking that ovulation has already taken place.
At a certain point during the menstrual cycle, progesterone levels in the body fall, and this acts as a signal for the ovaries to produce an egg. The changes in hormone levels also cause the wall of the uterus, the endometrium, to develop a lining which makes it more receptive to egg implantation.
The active ingredient in Noriday is an artificial version of progesterone called norethisterone. When used in contraception, this hormone prevents the endometrium from developing, so that an egg is not as likely to attach to it. It also helps to thicken cervical fluid, making it more difficult for sperm to reach an egg and initiate fertilisation.
The minipill is different from the regular or combined pill, in that it does not contain oestrogen. This makes it more suitable for those users who are sensitive to oestrogen and more susceptible to associated side effects. It can also, in some cases, be used by women who are breastfeeding, although this should be discussed with a doctor beforehand.
