Zelleta is a minipill, or progesterone-only pill, made and marketed in the UK by Morningside Healthcare. It is a form of hormonal birth control which does not contain oestrogen like combined oral contraceptives do. Consequently, it is suitable for those users who are more sensitive to oestrogen, as it is not as likely to cause side effects. Furthermore, as it does not significantly affect the quality of breast milk, it can also be taken by women who are breastfeeding.
- Effective contraceptive treatment
- Better for those susceptible to side effects
- Can prevent bleeding entirely in some
In regulating the phases the body goes through each month during menstruation, progesterone plays a vital role in preparing the reproductive system for pregnancy. Levels of the hormone rise and fall at various points, initiating: the process of ovulation, whereby the ovary releases an egg into the fallopian tube, where it can be fertilised by sperm; the breaking down of the uterine wall lining, which houses an implanted egg and harbors its development; and the thickening of mucus in the cervix, through which sperm has to pass in order to reach its destination.
Contained in Zelleta is a synthetic version of progesterone, which replaces levels of the hormone as they fall. It is called desogestrel, and convinces the body that preparations for pregnancy do not need to be made, thereby altering the quality of the uterine wall lining, and making it less conducive to egg implantation. It also makes the mucus in the cervix thicker, so that sperm cannot traverse through as easily. Whereas other minipills do not contain a level of the hormone sufficient enough to prevent ovulation, this treatment can stop it from occurring in some users.

How to use Zelleta
Always take the pill in the manner your doctor has instructed. This, along with an adherence to the directions provided in the leaflet supplied, will help to reduce the likelihood of side effects and maximise the efficacy of the treatment.
- Take as directed by your prescriber.
- For the minipill this will usually be one tablet per day for each day of your menstrual cycle, with no break.
- Swallow the tablets whole, with water if necessary.
- Take at the same time each day.
- If you forget to take your pill, or are late taking it, refer to the leaflet for guidance on what to do next. You may need to apply extra measures, such as a barrier contraceptive, in order to stay protected. Contact your doctor or family planning nurse if you are still not certain.
- When starting this treatment, it is advisable in most cases to do so on the first day of your period. If you have recently been using another form of hormonal birth control, or have been pregnant in the last month, you should consult the leaflet for specific advice.
