Product information

Eklira Genuair is a medication marketed by AstraZeneca, and is used to treat chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, otherwise known as COPD. It is supplied in dry powder form, in an inhaler. The treatment is an anticholinergic bronchodilator, which works by alleviating muscular tension in the passages to the lungs.

  1. Effective bronchodilator
  2. Relieves symptoms such as breathlessness
  3. Simple to dispense

COPD is a term used to describe a number of long-term conditions, which impede breathing, induce symptoms such as coughing and excess phlegm, and heighten a person’s susceptibility to chest infections. Among these conditions are emphysema and bronchitis. The NHS estimates that there are likely around 3 million people in the UK living with COPD; and that over two thirds of these are undiagnosed or dismissed as something less serious.

Smoking is the leading cause of the condition, which is why diagnoses are more prominent in those aged 35 and over; the chances of developing COPD grow the longer a person smokes. This causes the airways to become damaged, and eventually the walls of the airways thicken and express more mucus. Consequently, obstruction occurs and breathing becomes harder; particularly during periods of exertion.

In treating the condition, the first measure a doctor will advise will be to stop smoking, to help prevent the condition from progressing. COPD symptoms will in many cases require long-term or maintenance treatment. Eklira is one such medication, and falls into the category known as long-acting bronchodilators.

Taken through an inhaler twice a day, Eklira contains an agent called aclidinium bromide, and works by inhibiting the function of a chemical called acetylcholine on muscarinic receptors. This helps to ease muscular tension, and relax the walls of the airways, providing more room for air to pass to the lungs and allowing smoother breathing.

Prior to use, take time to familiarise yourself with the instructions provided in the patient information leaflet, as well as those issued by your doctor. This will help you to minimise the risk of side effects and increase the efficacy of the treatment.

  1.  Use according to your prescriber’s instructions.
  2. For adult cases of COPD, this will typically be one inhaled dose taken twice per day; once in the morning and once in the evening.
  3. One dose of Eklira usually lasts for around 12 hours, so it is important to try and take the medication at the same times each day.
  4. It is a maintenance treatment, meaning it will need to be taken every day until otherwise stated by your doctor.
  5. Detailed information and diagrams explaining how to use the inhaler device are supplied in the accompanying leaflet.
  6. Do not exceed the dose prescribed.
  7. If you forget to take it, do so as soon as you remember, unless it is nearly time for your next dose. If your next dose is due, skip the one you have missed and carry on the course as normal.

The above is only a summary of the instructions you will need to follow when using this item. More comprehensive information can be found in the leaflet provided.
