Ipratropium Steri-Neb is a nebuliser solution made by IVAX, and is used to medicate cases of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD. It is a type of medicine called an anticholinergic bronchodilator. This means that it is effective at widening the airways when they become narrowed by muscular contractions. It can only be applied through the use of a nebuliser, which transforms the solution into an inhalable mist.
- Soothes respiratory tension
- Reduces breathing difficulties
- Easy to use
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is a condition which inhibits breathing during periods of exertion, produces a phlegmy cough, and increases a person’s susceptibility to chest infections. Behind asthma, it is one of the most frequently occurring respiratory illnesses, with an estimated 3 million people in the UK currently living with the disease. The NHS believes that of these 3 million cases, only around a third will have been given an accurate diagnosis; as it is often wrongly identified merely as a cough associated with smoking.
It is thought that smoking is the main cause of COPD. Roughly nine out of every 10 cases are thought to be induced by the habit, and one quarter of smokers will go on to present the illness. Other cases may be brought on by persistent exposure to pollutants, dust or chemicals at work.
Symptoms occur when the tissue in the airways becomes irritated and inflamed. This causes the muscles lining the airways to contract and tighten, making them narrower and inducing breathing difficulties. The production of mucus also increases, and this causes further obstruction to breathing.
The active ingredient in Ipratropium Steri-Neb, which is only available to buy in the UK on prescription, is a drug of the same name: ipratropium bromide. It is an antimuscarinic, which works by blocking the action of a chemical in the body called acetylcholine. In doing this, the treatment helps the muscles lining the airways to relax, facilitating easier breathing.
