Chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder is a term used to describe several conditions, including bronchitis, emphysema and chronic obstructive airways disease. The main cause of these conditions is smoking, although they can on rarer occasions be the result of exposure to pollutants, dust or fumes.
In the UK, the NHS estimates that around 3 million people are living with the disease, but that over two thirds of these cases will be undiagnosed. COPD is often confused with smoker’s cough, but the condition is nonetheless serious and should be treated as quickly as possible, as it can progress and lead to deteriorating symptoms.
When the patient inhales an irritant such as cigarette smoke, this cases the airways to become inflamed, causing scarring and damage to the tissues lining the respiratory passages. As a result, the airways develop a heightened tendency to narrow, and produce excess mucus, which can initiate breathing problems and coughing, particularly during periods of physical exertion. Those who have COPD are also much more likely than those who don’t to develop chest infections.
One of the first measures a doctor will take in treating the condition will be to advise the cessation of smoking; or limiting exposure to whichever irritant is responsible. To relieve symptoms, they may also suggest a mucolytic drug such as Mucodyne. The active ingredient in this medicine, which is a substance called carbocisteine, works by reducing the thickness of mucus in the airways. In doing so, it makes mucus easier for the person with COPD to expel by coughing, clearing a path for the user to breathe more easily.
