Dioralyte is a powdered oral solution manufactured by Sanofi to help combat dehydration caused by diarrhoea. It works by replenishing the body’s stores of fluids, salts and glucose often lost during an episode of acute diarrhoea. It does this by encouraging the absorption of these vital elements in the gut.
- Combats dehydration caused by diarrhoea
- Drinkable solution
- Contains glucose to promote fast absorption
Acute episodes of diarrhoea are very common and almost everyone will experience them at some point in their life. They are characterised by more frequent and looser stools. It is often linked to other symptoms such as sickness and stomach pains. Diarrhoea can be caused by a number of factors including: a virus such as norovirus; a bacteria in contaminated food; or parasites.
Most cases pass within a few days and have no significant impact on the affected person’s health. However, if fluids and essential minerals are not properly replenished, you can develop dehydration which can become serious. The body needs fluids in order to look after the digestive system, skin, eyes and joints. Without it you may feel sluggish, thirsty, have strong smelling or darker-coloured urine and not pass water as often as normal. Prolonged or severe cases of dehydration can cause seizures, brain damage and fatalities.
Diarrhoea occurs when microorganisms upset the mucous membrane in either the small or large intestine. This results in abnormal amounts of water being allowed to pass into the body’s faeces, producing a loose or watery stool. The irritated gastrointestinal system becomes overactive resulting in an increase in the amount of times you go to the toilet.
Avoiding food at the early stages of diarrhoea is quite normal but you should try and eat something solid as soon as you feel able. The dehydrative effects can usually be eased through drinking small and frequent sips of water.
Oral rehydration solutions such as Dioralyte are available to help minimise the effects of losing a lot of fluid and essential electrolytes. The active ingredients include glucose, sodium chloride, potassium chloride and disodium hydrogen citrate. It works by stimulating the absorption of salts and fluids in the intestines which the body needs to function. If you are unable to tolerate this medication or your symptoms do not improve then you may need to speak to a healthcare professional.
