Diarrhoea is a condition most, if not all people will encounter at some point in their lives. It is characterised by an increased frequency in bowel movements, and often a looser, more fluid-like consistency in stool. The condition is not a comfortable one, and can sometimes be accompanied by headaches, stomach pain, a loss of appetite, and nausea and vomiting. It can, in more serious cases, lead to dehydration too.

The condition is categorised into two types: acute and chronic. In its acute form, diarrhoea can occur due to any number of reasons, including: the presence of a stomach ‘bug’, such as a parasite, virus or bacterial infection; the over-consumption of alcohol; a bad reaction to food; or stress. It can also be a side effect of medication, such as antibiotics. Most cases of short-term diarrhoea are not serious and may pass on their own, but treatment should be sought in those cases where symptoms are causing severe discomfort or are excessive.

Causes of chronic diarrhoea are wide-ranging too, and will often necessitate advice and treatment from a doctor. These include the presence of: irritable bowel syndrome; inflammatory bowel disease; diverticulitis; chronic pancreatitis; or coeliac disease. In rarer instances and especially when accompanied by blood in the stool, it may also be an indication of bowel cancer. For this reason, those who notice blood after going to the toilet should notify their doctor as soon as possible.

Short-term cases of diarrhoea do not usually require treatment, and will in many instances pass within four days. It is still important during this period however, to get plenty of rest and make sure that you are drinking enough fluids. Cutting down on particularly fatty or spicy foods may also help to improve symptoms and aid recovery; as will taking extra care with hygiene, such as washing your hands carefully after visiting the toilet, and prior to eating food.

Prescription treatment may be advised in those cases where the effects of diarrhoea are severe. Imodium is one such treatment, and contains a functioning constituent called loperamide hydrochloride. This type of drug is known as an antimotility treatment, and works by slowing down the action of the bowel. It does this by preventing opioid receptors in the bowel from receiving messages which instigate contractions and pass food through the intestinal tract. This slows down the transportation of food through the gut, giving the body more time to absorb water from it, and decreasing urgency. The result is firmer stools, passed less frequently.

Getting access to diarrhoea treatment can be tricky when you’re feeling under the weather.
