Loperamide is a treatment for acute diarrhoea, manufactured by Wockhardt. It is a hard capsule treatment, which is designed to be taken over the course of a single day. The treatment contains the same active ingredient as Imodium, and works in much the same way, by increasing the absorption of water from stools and decelerating their passage through the bowel.
- Treats acute diarrhoea
- Simple to swallow hard capsule
- Effective at reducing symptoms
Diarrhoea is a condition that almost everyone will experience at least once at some point in their lives. Symptoms include passing stools with increased frequency, and in some cases urgency; as well as wateriness in the stools. Headaches, stomach pain, the need to be sick, and loss of appetite can also result. It is often not serious, but more severe cases can lead to dehydration, and may require treatment.
Acute cases of diarrhea can be initiated by any one or more of a number of causes, such as: a gastric bug, be it a virus, bacterial infection or a parasite; consuming too much alcohol; a bad reaction to food, or an allergy; or feelings of stress. Sometimes it can be a reaction to an antibiotic or other form of medication; or an indicator of appendicitis. In the case of appendicitis, symptoms will usually be accompanied by severe abdominal pain, and medical advice should be sought immediately.
In less serious cases of diarrhoea, symptoms will usually pass within a few days. The recommended course of treatment for such instances is plenty of rest, along with plenty of fluids to avert the risk of dehydration. Some may find that their condition is made worse by spicy or fatty foods, so these are best avoided.
However, more severe instances may require prescription treatment. Loperamide is one such option. It contains a functioning agent of the same name, which works on specific nerve receptors in the gut. In doing so, it reduces their sensitivity to those signals which cause muscular contractions in the intestine, causing food to pass through more slowly, and decreasing the frequency of bowel movements. It also facilitates the better absorption of water from stool, so that movements are firmer and not as loose.
