Eczema, or dermatitis, is a common skin condition affecting one in twelve adults in the UK. It is characterised by red, dry, thickened and inflamed patches of skin which can be painful and itchy. They tend to develop in specific areas of the body such as the scalp, knees, elbows, cheeks, hands and neck. More extreme cases can also produce weeping and crusty areas or lumps and blisters.
Our skin naturally produces a combination of fats and oils in order to retain moisture. When the skin’s ability to make these substances is impaired it becomes prone to drying out. When dry, the skin can be irritated by certain triggers; including soap, detergents, foods, cold or damp weather, clothing material and hormones. Scratching the itchy and sore areas can cause open wounds which leave the body susceptible to infection. To try and prevent this from happening those with eczema should keep their nails short and wear thin, loose layers of clothing.
There is no cure for this chronic condition and it can cause other health problems such as infections, difficulty sleeping and psychological issues. People with eczema can go through periods where the symptoms are not as noticeable but also phases where the symptoms flare up. Some cases can improve over time and even resolve completely, although this is fairly rare. Terra-Cortril treatment is available to buy and can help ease the frustrating symptoms of eczema.
Terra-Cortril ointment is absorbed directly into the skin and works by killing off bacteria cells by stopping them from being able to reproduce. It also decreases the release of certain chemicals in the skin which widen the blood vessels in an inflammatory reaction. By killing bacteria and preventing inflammation the unpleasant eczema symptoms can be reduced.
