Enlarged prostate, also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia, is a condition which causes difficulty passing water. It is more common among men aged 50 and over.
- Nearly a third of men over 70 affected
- Caused by hormonal conversion
- Treatable with long-term medication
We do not provide medications for enlarged prostate through our online pharmacy service. If you think you may have BPH, we recommend you see your GP in person to discuss your symptoms further.
What is Doxazosin?
Doxazosin belongs to a group of medications called vasodilators. These drugs are prescribed to treat hypertension (high blood pressure) and symptoms of an enlarged prostate, and reduce tension in the prostate and urinary tract.
How does Doxazosin work?
Doxazosin works by blocking alpha receptors that are found in blood vessels of the muscle wall. This allows the blood vessels to relax, improving blood flow and lowering blood pressure. These receptors are also found in the muscle of the prostate gland, helping it to relax, and they reduce the pressure it puts on the bladder.
Doxazosin and Hypertension
Hypertension is a condition that rarely presents with any symptoms, and therefore may go undiagnosed for long periods of time. It’s a common condition in the UK, with around one third of adults believed to have it. While the condition itself does not present health risks, it may be a precursor to serious events and illnesses in the future, such as heart attacks and kidney disease. It can be identified via a blood pressure test, which can be conducted by a clinician at a GP surgery. Some pharmacies and workplaces may offer the test free of charge.
Causes of high blood pressure are hard to diagnose in individuals, but genetic factors (having a family member with it or an African or Caribbean ethnic background) and lifestyle factors (obesity, smoking and high alcohol consumption) may all contribute to its development. Treatment consists of a combination of medications (such as Doxazosin) and lifestyle changes (getting plenty of exercise and eating a healthy diet).
Doxazosin and Benign prostate enlargement
Benign prostate enlargement (BPE) is a common condition in men over the age of 50. Although it may cause some distress, it is not a health risk. Symptoms include difficulty urinating, an inability to empty the bladder and a frequent need to urinate. It’s not clear why this happens, but it’s likely linked to hormonal changes that occur when we get older, which result in prostate enlargement and the prostate pressing on the bladder.
Diagnosis includes a urine test, but a definitive verdict to ensure that something more serious isn’t causing the symptoms may need to be made following an assessment at your nearest hospital. Treatment may not be necessary if your symptoms are mild and can be managed by making changes such as avoiding alcohol, fizzy drinks and caffeine. In more severe cases, you may be prescribed a treatment that reduces the size of the prostate or helps to manage symptoms (such as Doxazosin). Surgery may be required in extreme cases.
