First-time users of Viagra might be daunted by the range of doses available. Which is going to be strong enough? Will the weaker dose work for me? Is there such a thing as a dose which is too strong?

For most men experiencing erectile dysfunction, the middle dose of Viagra, 50mg, is the typically prescribed beginning dose, as per the manufacturer’s patient information leaflet. These will be cases where the user is generally healthy and has no significant underlying medical conditions, and is therefore not prone to side effects.

However, if you are a first-time user and you choose to purchase your Viagra medication from Treated.com, we will recommend that you commence treatment at the lowest dose possible, which for Viagra is 25 mg.

With all medicines, including those for ED, your doctor will usually prescribe the lowest dose possible in order to minimise the risk of potential side effects.

Starting on the median dose

The middle 50mg dose gives the prescriber the ability to adjust upwards or downwards, depending on the patient’s response:

  1. If 50mg produces sufficient results, and there is no need to increase it, the dosage will likely be kept the same.
  2. If, on the other hand, the 50mg dose is not strong enough, an increase may be recommended.
  3. For those cases where the 50mg produces mild side effects, such as a headache or slight vision problems, the lower dose may be prescribed instead

(Be aware that priapisms, or instances where Viagra causes an uncontrollable erection which endures for more than 4 hours, should be seen urgently by a doctor.)

How effective is it?

Even though there is a stronger version available, the 50mg dose has a high rate of efficacy. Clinical trials have shown that:

  1. the 50mg dose was effective in 74% of men tested
  2. compared to 63% for the lower dose
  3. and 82% for the higher dose

Therefore, if you have ED symptoms, are taking Viagra for the first time and are otherwise healthy, the 50mg dose is usually recommended as a starting point.

What should I do if it doesn't work?

To make sure you’re using the right dose, it is important to let your doctor know when taking the 50mg dose if you feel it is not effective enough, or if you notice any additional or unusual reactions. Never attempt to adjust the dosage yourself by taking two tablets or breaking tablets in half.
