Fungal skin infections can appear in various places on the body. Common examples of this kind of illness include Athlete’s Foot, Jock Itch and Ringworm. They are all caused by a fungal imbalance or over-prominence of one type of fungi on the skin, but may have slightly different symptoms.
The most recognisable qualities of Athlete’s Foot are a rash between the toes. Patches of skin may also become dry, leading to a flaky or scaly quality. It can be passed from person to person through skin-to-skin contact or via indirect contact, such as shared towels or bed sheets. The condition develops on the feet as this area is ideal for certain types of fungi to grow.
Ringworm can be picked up from various sources, often through contact with animals. But it can also be transferred between people, again through either direct or indirect means. Symptoms manifest in the form of raised rings on the skin, which may appear on the face, neck or hands, and be inflamed and itchy. Jock-itch is a similar condition, which affects the groin and upper thighs, and can be exacerbated by tight clothing and exercise; which can produce excess sweat and moisture and allow fungus to grow.
When treating the condition, a doctor may issue an antifungal, such as Diflucan, to clear up the infection. The active ingredient in this medication is fluconazole, which works by compromising fungal cell structure. It does this by reducing their capability to produce a self-sustaining chemical called ergosterol, which it needs to maintain cell integrity. Without it, the fungal cells become weaker, and their contents escape, leading the fungi to deplete in number. Symptoms clear up when fungal balance is restored.
