Fluconazole is a treatment for fungal infections. It is the generic version of the medication known as Diflucan and is made by Teva. The administration of this capsule will depend on the nature of the infection. For those affecting the skin, such as Athlete’s Foot and Ringworm, a typical dose might be one tablet per day for a duration of 6 weeks.
- One a day capsule
- Reliable treatment for fungal infections
- Versatile range of uses
There are several types of fungus that live naturally and harmlessly on the body. However, under certain conditions, the balance of these fungi can become disturbed; and when one is too prominent, an infection may occur, and cause irritation to the skin. Depending on where the infection is, certain symptoms can develop. For example, Athlete’s Foot is a fungal infection which manifests between the toes. This can lead to a rash, and the flaking and peeling of skin in the region.
Ringworm is another form of fungal skin infection. This can occur in various places on the body, such as on the arms and hands, neck and face. It is characterised by a rash, which may take on the form of a raised ring or oval-shaped bump. When ringworm occurs on the upper thighs or in the genitals, this is sometimes referred to as Jock Itch, and is caused by tight clothing, or perspiration during exercise.
Infections of this kind can be transferred from one person to another in a variety of ways. Direct skin-to-skin contact is one way. Sometimes, this fungus can be passed on through indirect contact too. This might be with the use of towels, or shared communal areas such as showers. It can also be passed from animal to human, and be picked up through stroking a pet.
To treat the condition, a doctor will typically issue an antifungal medication to help restore normal fungal balance in the infected region. Fluconazole is one such treatment, and is only available to buy in the UK with a prescription. In this capsule, the active ingredient is a substance of the same name, which works by interfering with the cell structure of the offending fungus.
Fluconazole does this by stopping the fungus from producing ergosterol, a substance which it requires to keep its cells intact. When the production of ergosterol is interrupted, holes begin to appear in the walls of fungal cells, and vital constituents leak out. The offending cells then die off, and balance is restored.
