Product information

Lamisil is a brand of antifungal medication, which uses the functioning ingredient terbinafine to fight fungal nail infections. It is also adept at clearing up fungal skin infections.

  1. Effectively kills off the infected organisms
  2. Branded tablet medication
  3. One-a-day treatment

What does Lamisil treat?

Onychomycosis is a fungal infection of the nail and is contracted because of an increase in the production of fungal cells that live on the skin. The infection can then breach the surrounding area including damaged nails, and cause them to discolour and thicken. The nail can become brittle and parts of it may flake off, or it may become detached from the nailbed completely. The condition is fairly common in adults, especially those over the age of 55, and does not usually cause any pain. However, if left untreated the nail area may become inflamed, making it painful to carry out everyday activities such as walking or writing.

What causes fungal nail infections?

There are various reasons why a fungal nail infection might develop. Athlete's foot is one, which can transfer from the skin to the nails. Once an infection is established on the toenails it can be easily passed on to the fingernails, especially if the affected area is itched. Although they are less common, infections of the fingernails may be found in those who frequently wash their hands or work in water, as this can cause damage to the nail base, thus allowing fungi to enter. There are also some health conditions that make you more susceptible to a fungal nail attack such as diabetes, psoriasis, poor circulation or a weakened immune system.

When should Lamisil tablets be used?

A course of antifungal treatment such as Lamisil is recommended to clear up a fungal nail infection. The active constituent in Lamisil is terbinafine hydrochloride, which is part of the antifungal medicine group. It works by rebalancing the number of fungi present in the body. It does this by stopping ergosterol from being created, a component used by the infection-causing fungi to multiply. The antifungal agent damages the structure of the cell membranes, and is then able to destroy them.

Lamisil can be prescribed as a continuous treatment or ‘off-label’ as a pulsed therapy.

  • Lamisil continuous treatment

Continuous treatment refers to a daily dose of medication taken over a long period of time, usually several weeks or months.

  • Lamisil pulsed therapy

The pulsed method uses a higher dose and an intermittent application method. This means that a patient will take 500mg of lamisil each day for one whole week, then stop treatment for three weeks before recommencing another week’s course of 500mg lamisil. This is repeated for three months.
