Product information

Daktarin Oral Gel is used to treat fungal infections of the mouth and throat (oral thrush). It can also be used in infections of the digestive tract, such as the gullet and stomach. The gel is marketed in the UK by Janssen-Cilag, and contains an antifungal ingredient called miconazole.

Several types of fungus live on the body, usually harmlessly. However, when the body comes into contact with other types of fungi, or if this balance becomes upset, this can result in one type of fungus becoming more dominant; leading to an infection. When this occurs, it’s called thrush.

Thrush can affect different parts of the body. It can occur externally or internally on or around the genitals (such as in the vagina). The infection can also develop inside the body, in the mouth and throat. This is called oral thrush.

The fungus (or yeast) that causes most cases of thrush is Candida albicans. An infection with this fungus is also referred to as Candidiasis, or more generally as a yeast infection.

There are a range of possible causes. Oral thrush can sometimes develop because someone has poor oral hygiene or smokes. In some cases, it can occur if someone has been taking medicines like antibiotics or corticosteroids for a long time. Another reason someone might develop thrush is if they have a weakened immune system; Candida can thrive if the body’s defences are not operating as they should, and working to keep the presence of the yeast at a healthy level. Brushing your teeth twice a day, using a mouthwash regularly, and stopping smoking if you smoke can all help to prevent oral thrush.

The symptoms of an oral thrush infection include the development of a white, lumpy layer, or white patches, on the tongue or throat; redness, irritation and burning in the mouth or throat; and an odd taste in the mouth. Because everyone has at least some level of Candida in their mouth, it’s not possible to pass oral thrush on to someone else. It’s an abundance of this yeast that causes the infection.

When someone has oral thrush, they’ll most often need treatment to tackle the infection. This can be prescribed in the form of an antifungal treatment. Daktarin contains an ingredient called miconazole. This works by stopping the fungus from generating a compound it needs to sustain cells walls, called ergosterol. When it has done this, the fungus is unable to maintain cell integrity, and small holes develop, so that the contents leak out. This causes the fungal cells to die, allowing the body to reduce the presence of the fungi, and restore balance. The infection then clears up.

If someone is taking a medication (such as antibiotics) that is thought to be the cause, a doctor may review their treatment plan to see if they can reduce the chances of the infection becoming worse or recurring.

  3. People using dentures are advised to remove these before going to sleep and rubbing them with the gel, to prevent the infection spreading to them.
