Haemorrhoids is a condition which affects the anus and rectum. Also known as piles, it occurs when varicose veins appear in this area, leading to raw, broken patches of skin, and swelling. It results in symptoms such as itching, soreness, general discomfort and pain when sitting down or opening the bowels. In some cases, blood may also be present when passing stools.
The condition, although uncomfortable when active, is very seldom a cause for concern. Most cases will pass on their own within a matter of days, without the need for medical intervention. However, other cases may be uncomfortable to the point where symptoms prove to be a distraction, and get in the way of a person’s daily routine. In such instances, prescription treatment can help to reduce the severity of the condition and expedite a faster recovery.
Varicose veins in the anus can most often be attributed to high blood pressure in the vessels in that region. Possible causes of this may be high blood pressure in general, obesity, or increased tension in the muscles in that area, such as during periods of diarrhoea. Adversely, a person may also find that they develop haemorrhoids when they are constipated, due to exerting strain when going to the toilet.
In treating the condition, a doctor may advise eating a healthier, more fibrous diet to ease constipation, or improve a person’s weight. They may also propose undertaking measures to lower blood pressure in those cases where it is too high. Medication for piles, however, aims to decrease the severity of irritated tissue in the stricken area and soothe discomfort.
Hydrocortisone is a type of steroid, which is found in several prescription piles treatments. It acts by stemming the function of a chemical released by the immune system, thus helping to reduce inflammation. Most haemorrhoid treatments contain a local anaesthetic too, the purpose of which is to ease feelings of soreness.
Products such as Proctofoam, Scheriproct, Xyloproct and Proctosedyl consist of a combination of these two ingredients. Anusol HC and Anugesic HC, in addition to a corticosteroid, also contain a number of other agents, which work as analgesics and antiseptics; whereas Anusol Cream does not contain a steroid agent, but instead carries antiseptic and astringent constituents. These help raw areas in the anus to heal.
As well as being directly applicable to external piles, most of these products are also supplied with an appendable nozzle. When fixed onto the dispensing tube, these can be used to reach internal cases of piles situated inside the rectum.
Even though it is very often not serious, piles symptoms can be difficult and frustrating to endure. However, getting treatment for haemorrhoids online is easy with our confidential service. After choosing your product, you’ll be provided with a health questionnaire. The answers you provide to this will be surveyed by a practising doctor, and once your medication is approved, our UK-based pharmacy will ship it to your door. Delivery on every item we sell is made by tracked parcel, and all the products we stock are either sourced direct from the manufacturer or reputable wholesale suppliers.
Types of Treatment
One of the first things a doctor will address when deciding how to treat piles symptoms is the probable cause. For instance, if the patient is experiencing piles as a result of being constipated, they may advise increasing fibre consumption in order to make bowel movements softer and more regular. Those examples caused by conditions such as obesity or high blood pressure can sometimes be eased by addressing certain exacerbating lifestyle factors, such as a bad diet or a lack of exercise.
Prescription treatment may be recommended in those cases where haemorrhoids are proving to be particularly uncomfortable and affecting a person’s routine or quality of life. Medications for haemorrhoids are available in a number of forms, including suppository pills, ointments, foams or creams. These are directly applied into, or around the anus, depending on where the problem is most apparent. Piles treatments include products such as Anusol, Scheriproct or Proctosedyl.
How do they work?
All of the haemorrhoid medicines available here at Treated.com apart from Anusol Cream contain a corticosteroid, and a soothing analgesic.
The function of these agents is to calm inflammation and reduce discomfort respectively. Hydrocortisone, a steroid used in most of these products, works by limiting the activity of chemicals the immune system releases in response to varicose veins, which can cause inflammation. Pramocaine, lidocaine and cinchocaine are types of anaesthetic, which prevent the transmission of signals from the affected site.
Anusol Cream contains agents which have antiseptic qualities and encourage healing.
What are the side effects?
The risks associated with these products are generally quite low. But like all treatments, they may cause allergic reactions, and most of them carry a risk of irritation when used for long periods. More information can be located on the respective product pages.
Can I take them with other medications?
Your doctor may advise that you take special care when using some of these products alongside drugs for an irregular heartbeat. To be safe, it is always recommended that you inform your prescriber of any other treatments you are currently using.
What’s the difference between the medications?
The products are supplied in various forms, as ointments, creams, a foam, and suppository tablets. The majority of them contain both a steroid and an anaesthetic. Anusol Cream however is steroid-free, and consists only of antiseptic or discomfort-relieving agents.
Should I take foam, ointment, cream or suppository tablets?
It mostly depends on which you’re most comfortable with. Ointments and creams, like Anugesic and Anusol, are largely regarded as the easiest to apply, but may need to be administered several times a day; whereas foams, like Proctofoam, are generally inserted into the back passage only twice a day. Some suppository tablets, such as Ultraproct, are once-a-day treatments. You can find out more by consulting our product pages.
Are there different side effects?
The most common side effect of these medications is further irritation to the area being affected. The risk of this increases the longer the treatment is used. Further details are available on the respective page for each item.
