Scheriproct ointment & suppositories
Scheriproct is a treatment used to relieve haemorrhoids. It contains two active constituents, prednisolone and cinchocaine, which work to relieve pain and decrease irritation in the affected region. The treatment is available to buy in the UK in two forms, Scheriproct ointment and suppositories, and is made by the well-known German pharmaceutical firm, Bayer. In the majority of cases, the ointment will be applied twice a day; whereas the suppository tablet will be inserted into the anus once a day. During the beginning of treatment however, a prescriber may advise you to use more in order to quickly get symptoms under control.
- Reduces inflammation
- Soothes discomfort
- Gets to work quickly
Haemorrhoids, known more commonly as piles, are characterised by the appearance of varicose veins inside or around the anus. They are the result of high pressure in the blood vessels in this area, and can cause feelings of irritation, discomfort, and pain when passing stools. In some cases, blood may appear in small amounts when wiping after going to the toilet.
There are several reasons why someone might get piles. They are more common in people over the age of 45, but do affect many younger people too. High blood pressure can play a role, as can being overweight, or spending lots of time sitting on particularly hard surfaces. If you are regularly constipated and often have to strain when going to the toilet, this can bring on haemorrhoids as well.
Many cases will pass on their own without the need for treatment, and are rarely cause for concern. Taking certain measures, such as altering your diet to increase your fibre consumption, can reduce constipation and lower your susceptibility to piles. It can also help to engage in weight loss techniques, such as having a balanced diet and undertaking light exercise, and working to bring down your blood pressure if it is too high.
However, those who are finding that haemorrhoids are causing them noticeable discomfort can find relief in the form of prescription medication. This aims at calming inflammation in the back passage, and works to relieve feelings of irritation. Scheriproct is one such solution. The functioning components in this treatment are prednisolone and cinchocaine. The first of these, prednisolone, is a type of steroid which restricts the action of chemicals released by the body which can increase inflammation. The other agent, cinchocaine, is an anaesthetic, and this prevents the transmission of painful signals along the nerves, thus reducing soreness.

How to use Scheriproct
Make sure you adhere to the instructions provided by your doctor when using this treatment, and that you carefully read the guidelines specified in the patient information leaflet beforehand. Doing so will enable you to get the most beneficial results and also limit the risk of harmful side effects.
- Use as directed.
For Scheriproct Ointment:
- In most cases, the typical dose will be twice a day, but your doctor may tell you to use more during the first day so that the treatment can get to work fast.
- Wash the site of application and carefully dry before use.
- Squeeze a small pea-sized amount onto your finger.
- Distribute softly over the affected region, on the skin and just inside the anus, but do not completely rub it in.
- For internal use, a nozzle is supplied. This should be added onto the end of the tube.
- When inserting, make sure you do so carefully, and that the whole length of the nozzle is inside the anus.
- Squeeze the tube lightly while drawing the nozzle out slowly.
- Thoroughly wash and rinse the nozzle after use.
For Scheriproct Suppositories:
- The typical dose will be one suppository a day, applied after the bowels have been emptied. However, your doctor may advise you to take more during the first couple of days.
- Gently insert the suppository into the anus.
- It may be easier to do this by standing and raising one leg, with your foot rested on a chair, or by squatting down. Your doctor or pharmacist will be able to advise you if you need further guidance.
For both treatments:
- Do not exceed the prescribed dose.
- Never make up for a missed dose with a double administration. If you forget to take it, try to do so when you remember.
- In the event that your next dose is due, simply skip the one you have missed and continue the course as scheduled.
- Do not take for more than 7 days continuously. If symptoms persist after this time, you may need to speak to your doctor again.
These directions are provided only as a guide. More detailed instructions can be found in the leaflet supplied with the treatment.
