Xyloproct is a preparation used in the treatment of piles, or haemorrhoids. It is an ointment which is designed to be applied to the area being affected. This may be on the outer skin of the anus, or inside the rectum. A special applicator is supplied for internal use. The manufacturers of Xyloproct are AstraZeneca, and specific instructions on how often it should be used will be provided by a prescriber.

Piles is a condition which most people will encounter at least once at some point in their lives. It is caused by the development of varicose veins in or around the anal region, which come about as the result of high pressure in the blood vessels in that area. This leads to swelling and irritation in or around the back passage, which can cause itchiness. Many who have piles may also experience slight pain, and rectal bleeding when passing stools.
There are a number of reasons why piles might occur. High blood pressure, being overweight or obese, or sitting on hard surfaces for long periods can be contributing factors. Those who experience prolonged periods of constipation, and have to strain when opening their bowels, may also be more likely to develop haemorrhoids.
When piles occur, the adoption of certain measures can help to reduce their severity. For instance, those with high blood pressure levels may try to lower them, by reducing their salt intake or making general improvements to their diet. People who are prone to constipation may try to ease this by incorporating more fibre into their meals.
For those cases where haemorrhoids are causing considerable discomfort, treatment may be recommended. The appearance of blood when passing stools is, in any case, something which you should bring to the attention of your doctor. But medication used to alleviate piles will usually take two approaches: to reduce inflammation, and ease soreness in the back passage.
This is the function of the ingredients found in Xyloproct. Lidocaine is an anaesthetic, which provides relief by dulling the intensity of pain signals sent from the affected area. The other agent, hydrocortisone, is a type of steroid. This reduces inflammation by preventing the action of an autoimmune chemical the body releases in response to varicose veins.
