Desloratadine is a prescription hay fever treatment, made by Actavis. It is the generic version of the tablet also sold under the brand name NeoClarityn. Desloratadine belongs to the antihistamine category of medications, and works by inhibiting the processes during an immune response which can cause rhinitis and inflammation. One tablet a day is taken, but the duration of treatment will depend on how often you get symptoms, and how long they last for.
- Fast relief from symptoms
- Lasts for up to 24 hours
- Easy one a day tablet
Hay fever is a common condition, affecting over 10 million people in the UK alone. It occurs when the body comes into contact with fine particles in the air, called pollen. These particles are released by plants during their reproductive cycle, and when inhaled, can cause an allergic response in some. This is characterised by the appearance of symptoms such as a runny nose, itching in the mouth and throat, sneezing, or irritated eyes. Collectively, these signs are known as rhinitis.
This reaction in the body is caused by the activity of a chemical, released by the immune system, called histamine. When the body detects the presence of an irritant, such as pollen, it treats the substance in the same way it would treat an infection, generating histamine and increasing the flow of blood to the affected region. Inflammation and swelling then results.
It is not known why hay fever affects some people but not others. Genetics are thought to be a contributing cause. But some posit that early conditioning can play a part too; those who are exposed regularly to secondary tobacco smoke during childhood may be more at risk.
Spring is the time when most people encounter symptoms at their worst, as this is when pollen levels tend to be high. Preventative measures, such as staying indoors when a high concentration of pollen is present, and limiting prolonged exposure, can help to lower the likelihood of symptoms. However, sometimes, coming into contact with pollen is simply unavoidable. In such cases, and particularly in those where hay fever is causing considerable or persistent discomfort, a doctor may advise treatment.
Desloratadine is an antihistamine, which you can buy as a tablet from our online pharmacy. It works by stopping histamine from joining with receptors, and initiating an allergic reaction to pollen and dust. This then helps to decrease the severity of allergy symptoms.
