Dymista is a combination treatment used to alleviate hay fever symptoms, provided in the form of a nasal spray. This is administered to the nostrils twice a day in most cases. Dymista, which is manufactured and marketed by Meda, contains two agents: a corticosteroid, and an antihistamine agent.

  1. Proficient at relieving symptoms
  2. Branded combination medicine
  3. Nasal spray directly targets inflammation

Hay fever is a common condition, which is thought to affect over 10 million people in the UK. As it is chiefly caused by high levels of pollen in the air, hay fever is more active during the months of spring. The most common characteristics of hay fever are a runny or blocked nose, an itchy throat, eye irritation and sneezing.

The reason why some people have hay fever and others do not isn’t completely understood, but it is thought that having a history of the condition in your family can make you more likely to get it. Some experts also think that exposure to certain pollutants during childhood, such as cigarette smoke, can also increase a person’s susceptibility to hay fever.

It occurs when the body’s natural defences overreact to an airborne substance. This doesn’t have to be pollen; dust mites can cause symptoms too. When the body registers the presence of these substances, it perceives them as a danger, and the immune system tries to combat them in the same way it would an infection. This results in the release of a chemical, called histamine, which can cause swelling and inflammation in the nasal passages, also known as rhinitis.

Many people find that taking measures to limit exposure to pollen can help, such as checking weather reports and staying indoors when levels are high, and showering or changing their clothes after being outside. But this isn’t always possible, and exposure is sometimes unavoidable.

In those cases where symptoms persist and cause considerable discomfort, a doctor may suggest prescription treatment. Dymista contains two active constituents, which work to counter the effects of this allergic response. These are called azelastine and fluticasone, and they function in different ways. Azelastine is a type of drug called an antihistamine, which prevents the inflammatory chemicals released by the immune system from connecting to the receptors which trigger symptoms. The other agent, fluticasone, is a corticosteroid. This actually works on the cells which store and expel histamine, to prevent them from discharging it. The advantage of a nasal spray is that it gets to the root of symptoms fast, and works immediately to provide effective relief.

  4. To use the nasal spray, first shake the bottle and then remove the cap.
  5. Before first use, the pump needs to be primed. Do this by squirting six shots into the air, until a light mist is produced.
  6. Priming should be performed again if the pump isn’t used for a period of seven days.
  7. Prior to applying the spray, blow your nose to clear any congestion.
  8. Tilt your head forwards slightly, then place the applicator carefully inside one nostril.
  9. Hold your finger over the other nostril to close it.
  10. Press down on the spray to release a shot, while lightly inhaling through your nostril.
  11. Then breathe out through the mouth.
  12. Repeat the above for the other nostril.
  13. Wipe the tip clean and replace the cap.
  14. Do not exceed the dose prescribed by your doctor.
  15. If you forget to administer a dose, do not make up for it by doubling up on your next one. Take it when you remember, before carrying on the course as normal.
