Hay fever is a condition characterised by swollen and inflamed airways, sneezing and a dry or irritable throat. It is most commonly triggered by the presence of fine particles in the air, such as dust or pollen. When the body comes into contact with these irritants, the immune system treats them in the same way it would an infection, by releasing a defensive chemical called histamine. This then causes the above mentioned symptoms.
Chronic idiopathic urticaria, also known as hives, is a different kind of allergic response. It is also caused by the activity of histamine, with potential triggers including contact with hot or cold temperatures, pollen or dust, certain foods, or a material such as latex. This type of reaction is characterised by the appearance of small fluid-filled breaks in the skin, which can become swollen and itchy.
It is not fully understood why some people are more susceptible to allergic reactions than others. But doctors posit that early conditioning can play a role; for instance if someone has been persistently exposed to a pollutant during a young age. Genetics are also another potential cause, with those who have a family history of allergies being more prone to reactions themselves.
To prevent symptoms, limiting contact with triggers as much as possible is usually the best course of action. However, exposure to irritants is sometimes not avoidable, and treatment may be required. Telfast contains fexofenadine, which belongs to the antihistamine category of drugs. It reduces the effect of a chemical called histamine, which the body releases as part of an immune response. When this chemical is released by the body's’ defences, it causes swelling and inflammation in the area susceptible to the trigger. Telfast helps histamine receptors to block the effects of the chemical, and this helps to reduce symptoms.
