Lansoprazole is a medication used to relieve heartburn, and other digestive conditions such as acid reflux, ulcers and an inflamed oesophagus. It is a generic capsule, made by Actavis. The branded version of this treatment is called Zoton, and contains the same functioning agent. Lansoprazole is available to buy from our UK-based pharmacy in two doses. The strength you are issued depends on which condition you are treating, and the severity of your symptoms.
- Proficient at relieving heartburn
- Easy to swallow capsule
- Reduces stomach acid
Heartburn is the result of stomach acids travelling up the food pipe, or oesophagus. This phenomenon is called gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GORD. In addition to heartburn, GORD can also cause an unpleasant taste in the mouth, and pain or difficulty when swallowing.
Many people may experience heartburn or other related symptoms on an infrequent basis, but it is likely to occur more regularly in those who are overweight, eat a lot of fatty foods, or are pregnant. It happens when the oesophageal sphincter (or valve) fails to work properly.
When a person eats, a circle of muscles (the oesophageal sphincter) acts as a gateway from the food pipe to the stomach. This opens to let food in, but closes again afterwards, so that digestive acids do not escape. However, in those instances where there is increased pressure on the stomach (which may be a result of the stomach being overly full or someone being overweight), these muscles may not contract sufficiently enough to stop acids from getting out. This can result in feelings of pain in the chest, or burning, typically after eating.
(Burning pain in the chest can sometimes be a symptom of a more serious condition, such as heart disease, so if you are experiencing pain for the first time, or if it is more severe than usual, you should see a doctor as soon as possible.)
Symptoms tend to be mild and may not last long in many cases. However those who find they are persistent and causing them concern can seek treatment. A doctor may advise cutting portion sizes down, and limiting alcohol or caffeine intake to counteract the condition. Those who have found these approaches ineffective may be issued prescription medication.
Lansoprazole works by inhibiting the action of proton pumps, which are located in the lining of the stomach, and are responsible for the production of stomach acids. In limiting their function, the drug decreases the presence of acids in the body, helping to reduce heartburn, and other symptoms associated with GORD.

Use this treatment in the manner prescribed by your doctor. Doing so will help you to maximise the efficacy of the course. You should also take care to follow the usage guidelines listed in the patient information leaflet, as this will assist you in limiting the risk of potential side effects.
- Take as directed.
- For heartburn, a prescribed course may be one tablet per day, for up to four weeks.
- In cases where it is used for the treatment of peptic ulcers or used in conjunction with antibiotics, the dose and longevity of use may vary.
- Swallow the capsules whole with water. They are more effective when taken at least half an hour before food.
- Take them at the same time each day. If you are taking one dose, it may be better do so in the morning. For those who are taking it twice a day, space your administrations out so that you take one in the morning and one at night.
- Do not exceed the amount specified by your doctor.
- In the event that you miss a dose, you can take it as soon as you remember provided that your next dose is not due. If it is, skip the dose you have missed and carry on the course as normal.
These instructions are provided only as a guide. More detailed directions can be located in the accompanying leaflet.
