Product information

Description

Nexium granules and tablets contain the proton pump inhibitor esomeprazole, which reduces levels of acid generated in the stomach. This eases the symptoms of gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, such as heartburn and acid reflux. The tablets are taken whole with water, while the granules are dissolved in water before being swallowed.

  1. Available as granules and as tablets
  2. Effective remedy for heartburn
  3. Commonly prescribed treatment

Heartburn is one of the more frequently experienced symptoms of a condition called gastroesophageal reflux disease (referred to GORD or GERD). It is an uncomfortable feeling in the chest which is caused when natural acids in the stomach travel against the digestive flow, up into the oesophagus. The acid can also reach up to the throat, causing a burning, sour sensation, which is known as acid reflux.

(Occasionally, burning pain in the chest can also be a sign of heart disease, so it is important to see your doctor as soon as possible if you are having this type of pain for the first time, or if you are feeling pain which is more severe than usual.)

GORD occurs when the ring of muscle situated between the oesophagus and stomach becomes loose and allows the acid to secrete from the stomach upwards. There are a number of circumstances which can bring about GORD, such as smoking, eating too much fat or drinking too much alcohol or coffee, or being overweight. It can also be caused by stress or pregnancy, and a family history of the problem is thought to be a risk factor.

Those with heartburn can introduce lifestyle changes to reduce the severity of the condition. A healthier diet, exercise, giving up smoking and even raising the head of your bed when sleeping can all help. However, in cases where symptoms persist, and over the counter remedies do not prove to be effective, a prescription medicine may be recommended.

The functioning substance in AstraZeneca Nexium is esomeprazole, which is a proton pump inhibitor. In the body, proton pumps are positioned in the lining of the stomach and it is these that produce digestive acid. Esomeprazole reduces the amount of acid which is generated, preventing it from overflowing into the oesophagus.

Nexium is also used for other conditions related to the production of acid in the stomach, including the prevention and treatment of ulcers in those who take nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) on a long term basis, and ulcers in the digestive tract caused by the bacteria helicobacter pylori.

You can renew your prescription for Nexium granules or tablets online in just a few minutes, with our simple consultation service. Take our questionnaire, and a practising doctor will review your case. Once approved, your medication will be dispensed by our UK pharmacy.

Directions

Directions

Read the directions given in the patient information leaflet carefully and follow any special instructions given to you by your clinician. This will help to reduce the chances of side effects and optimise the performance of the product.

  1. Administer the treatment as directed.
  2. Your dosage will be determined by your prescriber, depending on your condition and the severity of symptoms.

Nexium Granules

  1. Each sachet of Nexium granules contains 10mg of esomeprazole.
  2. Empty the sachet into a glass of water. Each sachet should be diluted in 15 ml of water (three teaspoons) so two sachets would require 30 ml of water, and so on.
  3. Stir the water containing the granules and wait a few moments for the mixture to thicken.
  4. Stir the mixture once again then drink. If there are granules left at the bottom of the glass, add a little more water and drink what is left.
  5. Do not allow the mixture to stand for longer than half an hour.

Nexium Tablets

  1. Swallow tablets whole with water.
  2. The tablets can be taken at any time of day, with food or on an empty stomach.
  3. If you have trouble swallowing the tablets, these can also be placed in water and mixed to make taking them easier. To do so, drop the tablets into a glass of water and stir, without crushing. Drink within 30 minutes.

For both versions:

  1. If you forget to take a dose of Nexium, you can take it as soon as you remember, but not if it is almost time for your next dose.
  2. Do not take double doses to compensate for ones you have missed.
  3. If you have missed a dose and your next one is due, omit the one you have missed and take your next dose at the scheduled time.

These directions are provided solely as a guide. Consult the patient information leaflet for more detailed instructions.
