Product information

Primolut N is a hormonal treatment for menstrual conditions, and is made by Bayer. It is a tablet treatment containing a synthetic hormone called norethisterone, which provides relief from period pain and heavy periods by mimicking the action of progesterone in the body. As well as easing discomfort related to menstrual bleeding, it is also employed in some cases to treat endometriosis, a condition where other parts of the body develop a lining similar to that of the uterine wall, and to delay the start of a period.

  1. Simple to take tablet
  2. Used to delay periods
  3. Manages heavy bleeding and period pain

Each month, the body goes through various preparations to make itself ready for pregnancy. One of these is the development of a lining along the uterine wall, or endometrium. When it has grown to a certain thickness, this lining is then able to harbour a fertilised egg, allowing it to settle and grow into an embryo.

In cases where sperm does not penetrate an egg, and implantation does not take place, this lining is shed through muscular contractions in the womb. Once the lining has come away, it is discharged via periodic bleeding. Some women have more severe muscular contractions at this time of the month, resulting in more severe pain.

This is caused when the muscles inhibit the supply of blood and oxygen to various parts of the womb, and the body releases chemicals called prostaglandins in response to this. As well as causing pain, these chemicals also result in sharper contractions, increasing discomfort in the region.

In charge of regulating the development and subsequent shedding of the womb lining is a hormone called progesterone. Oestrogen is responsible for building up the uterine lining. Progesterone increases in the follicular phase to maintain the lining. This hormone reduces its presence in the body right before the lining of the uterus builds up.

In Primolut N, the active constituent is a man-made version of this hormone, called norethisterone. When present, this ingredient convinces the body that the buildup and dispersal of the uterine lining does not need to happen, thereby lessening the need for muscular contractions and decreasing the likelihood of pain.

Using this medication can also allow those who menstruate to delay the onset of their period. They may choose to do this for various reasons, as sometimes the nature of a period can be inconvenient during certain times. For example special or important events including holidays or exams.

See your GP if you notice any changes in your period, or new symptoms. They should check to make sure there are no underlying problems which may be causing your symptoms, before issuing treatment.
