Sevikar is a drug provided in the form of a once-a-day tablet, made by Daiichi pharmaceuticals, and is indicated for high blood pressure. Available to buy in the UK on prescription only, Sevikar contains two functioning ingredients, both of which have a relaxing effect on arterial muscle walls, thereby allowing blood to pass through more easily and lowering blood pressure levels.
- Reduces tension in blood vessels
- Increases oxygen supply to the heart

Hypertension is the medical term used to described what is more generally known as high blood pressure, a condition where the heart has to beat with more exertion than is normal in order to sufficiently circulate blood around the body. Pressure is measured by a healthcare professional using a mercury-propelled device. This is a gauge which provides two readings. The first of these is a measure of how much force the heart has to beat with to get blood moving, and is referred to as systolic pressure. A second reading, called diastolic pressure, is taken to measure how much resisting tension is being exerted in the arterial pathways.
Pressure is then noted as a two figure reading, giving the systolic number over the diastolic number. High blood pressure is determined as being present when a person gives two consecutive pressure readings which are 140 over 90 or higher.
In the UK, the NHS puts the number of people affected by high blood pressure at around 30 per cent of the overall population, but also posits that because the condition is such an easy one to miss, the condition may be even more prominent than this. Symptoms of high blood pressure are fairly nonspecific, and can be easily mistaken for other conditions. Among these are a headache, nosebleeds, and blurred vision.
There are a number of reasons why a person might develop hypertension. It becomes more likely to occur in someone the older they get, and for reasons which aren’t fully understood, has a higher rate of incidence among people of African or Caribbean ethnicity. Maintaining a poor lifestyle is a definitive factor in bringing about high blood pressure too, and a major preventable cause. Traits of an unhealthy lifestyle include eating a diet which is high in salt, drinking too much alcohol, smoking or not getting enough exercise.
When treating the condition, this will be one of the first issues a practitioner addresses. Milder instances of hypertension can sometimes be resolved by making certain lifestyle adjustments. In others, however, medication may also be necessary to help bring blood pressure levels down.
In Sevikar, there are two active ingredients: olmesartan medoxomil and amlodipine. These are an angiotensin II receptor antagonist and a calcium-channel blocker, respectively. Olmesartan works by reducing the activity of a hormone in the body, called angiotensin II, which can cause blood vessels to become tight. By reducing the effects on the muscle lining of the arteries of calcium, amlodipine helps these routes to dilate, and allows for better circulation. This enables blood to move around more freely, and as a result, the heart doesn’t have to beat with as much force, thus reducing blood pressure.
