- Helps restore a regular digestive rhythm
- One tablet taken three times a day
IBS is a very common digestive system disorder which can cause stomach cramps, diarrhoea, bloating and constipation. It affects men and women of all ages although it tends to first come to light in young adults. It is estimated to affect around one in five adults of which the majority is women.
Food is moved through the body as the digestive system muscles contract and relax following a regular rhythm. Those diagnosed with IBS may instead follow a disrupted rhythm which pushes the food through too fast or too slow causing either diarrhoea or constipation. The direct cause for IBS is unknown although it is thought to be linked to a higher sensitivity in the gut, problems digesting food or miscommunicated brain signals.
IBS symptoms may be triggered or worsened by certain factors the most common being stress, alcohol, fizzy drinks, caffeine, chocolate and fried food. Each person diagnosed with IBS may experience different symptoms caused by different triggers. Your doctor may encourage you to keep a food diary to try and establish your own triggers. IBS is not a serious life-threatening condition but it can be frustrating to live with. Symptoms can appear for no apparent reason and last for weeks or months. However, for many, these symptoms are controllable with medication and lifestyle changes.
One treatment available to help ease IBS is mebeverine. This antispasmodic drug targets the muscles in the wall of your gut, relaxing them and allowing the digestive system to continue to work as it normally should. In IBS the control of these muscular contractions known as peristalsis is often abnormal resulting in abdominal difficulties.
IBS relief is only available from our UK pharmacy on a repeat basis, for patients who have already been prescribed treatment under the supervision of their doctor. If you are not currently taking medication for IBS or are experiencing new symptoms, you should see your GP or specialist.
