Product information

Maloff Protect is a medication used to prevent malaria when travelling to areas that carry a risk of the disease. It contains two active ingredients to prevent the spread of the parasite within the bloodstream. It is manufactured by Glenmark Pharmaceuticals Europe Ltd.

Malaria is caused by a parasite carried by mosquitoes. A mosquito bite can pass the parasite into the human blood stream, where it can begin to take over certain cells and cause the infected person to become ill. There are various strains of the disease, Maloff Protect is effective against plasmodium falciparum which is said to be the most deadly.

Malaria is one of the world’s most dangerous conditions, resulting in thousands of deaths each year. It is important to plan ahead if you are travelling to an area where malaria is present. As well as taking antimalarial medication you can reduce your risk of getting bitten by a mosquito by taking certain precautions. Ideally keep your arms and legs covered as much as possible, use insect repellent and sleep under a mosquito net. Maloff Protect does not act as a mosquito repellent.

The typical incubation period for a malaria infection is between 7-18 days. During this time several symptoms might develop. These can include flu-like symptoms, headache, vomiting, fever, muscle pain and diarrhoea. Malaria infections can be fatal and so it is extremely important to take the right steps to minimise your risk of contracting the disease.

Maloff Protect uses the active ingredients atovaquone and proguanil hydrochloride. These substances work to prevent any present parasites from being able to reproduce. They also weaken the parasites and leave them open to attack from the immune system.

A course of Maloff Protect medication should commence one or two days prior to entering a malaria-endemic area. It should then continue throughout your stay and for seven days after leaving the area. Each tablet should be taken with food or a milky drink.

It's important to make sure you order the right number of tablets to cover your trip. You should make sure you have enough tablets for each day you’re in a malaria-risk region, plus an extra nine (because you’ll start one or two days before and finish seven days after you come back.

We’ve put together a table to help you select the right number of tablets.

(Please note that Maloff Protect is provided only in packs of 24 or 36. If you specifically require a pack of 12, we recommend you consider ordering Malarone instead, as this is offered in smaller packs of 12.)
