Product information

Duavive is a medicine used to treat symptoms of the menopause such as hot flushes. It is prescribed for women who still have their womb and cannot be treated with progesterone. Duavive is a type of oestrogen hormone replacement therapy (HRT), which can come in many different forms. Duavive is a tablet which is swallowed and slowly released into the bloodstream.

The menopause refers to the stage leading up to and including the last menstrual period. It takes a long time for periods to completely stop. This occurs as the ovaries stop producing eggs and less oestrogen is created. Most women go through menopause between the ages of 45-55. Symptoms can continue for several years in some cases.

Every woman will go through menopause at some point, and in some cases no symptoms will be noticed. However, it is thought that around 80% of women will experience some form of symptoms due to less oestrogen being produced. Typical symptoms of the menopause include: hot flushes, night sweats, general changes to periods, irritability and tiredness.

Having HRT seeks to address these symptoms. Most HRT is administered in the form of combined therapy, where both oestrogen and progestogen are given. However, if your womb has already been removed then oestrogen-only HRT therapy such as Duavive is the most likely form of treatment.

Oestrogens used alone can lead to endometrial hyperplasia, which is the growth of the womb lining. Duavive contains bazedoxifene which blocks oestrogen from acting on the womb. The additional use of bazedoxifene is that it can be used to treat osteoporosis (a condition where bones become more fragile) which can occur as a result of ageing. Women lose bone tissue quicker than men and the process escalates after menopause, so HRT can help to counter this.
