Elleste Duet is a form of hormone replacement therapy, issued as a combined tablet. It is comprised of two synthetic hormones, which simulate the action of oestrogen and progesterone in the body. In doing this, they alleviate symptoms of the menopause, when applied as part of a HRT programme. Elleste Duet can be obtained in two strengths, and is made by Italian group Pharmacia.

The menopause is something which every woman will experience at a certain time in their life. For most, it will occur between the ages of 45 and 55, but it has been known to happen earlier or later in some cases. It is the process by which the ovaries cease producing an egg every month. Additionally, the build up and shedding of the endometrial lining (menstruation) begins to slow down before stopping completely.
When the above changes take place, hormone levels also begin to fluctuate. The amount of oestrogen the body naturally produces begins to fall, and various symptoms can come about as a consequence. These may include difficulty sleeping, vaginal dryness, headaches, mood swings and hot flushes. Some postmenopausal women may also be more prone to decreased bone strength, or osteoporosis.
In the majority of instances, these symptoms will be mild and not interfere with a person’s quality of life. However, they may affect some more significantly, and it is in these cases that treatment may be recommended. This may be issued in the form of hormone replacement therapy, or HRT.
There are three main types of HRT: oestrogen-only, cyclical and continuous combined. Elleste Duet falls into the cyclical category, and may be recommended for those who have begun to experience menopausal symptoms but have not yet completely stopped bleeding.
The functioning agents of Elleste Duet are estradiol and norethisterone. Estradiol, which is a synthetic version of oestrogen, supplements falling levels of the hormone, and alleviates symptoms. However, in some cases where oestrogen levels rise unopposed, the risk of cancer developing in the uterus can increase. In combined HRT, a progestogen is also provided, in the form of norethisterone, to help maintain hormonal balance.
