Kliovance is a pill containing artificial versions of oestrogen and progesterone, and is used in hormone replacement therapy. It is a lower dose alternative to other HRT pills, and is suitable for those who might be more sensitive to hormones than others. Kliovance is made by Novo Nordisk, and is prescribed to alleviate symptoms of the menopause in those women who: have not had surgery to remove the womb; and have not had a period for at least a year.
- Loaded in a helpful calendar pack
- Easy and efficient daily tablet
- Adept at easing menopausal symptoms
In most cases, the menopause occurs in a woman’s late 40s or early 50s. It is a completely natural part of the aging process, and involves the winding down of the menstruation and ovulation cycles. This means that the reproductive system no longer generates an egg ready to be fertilised; and that the thickening and exuviation of the uterine wall begins to occur less frequently, before stopping outright. This results in reduced and eventually no periodic bleeding, but also has an impact on hormone levels.
During the menopause, the amount of oestrogen the body produces drops, and this can lead to various symptoms. These include vaginal dryness, headaches, mood swings, difficulty sleeping, night sweats, and high temperature flushes. Some women may only experience these symptoms to a gentle degree. However, others may find themselves subject to more severe instances, where these effects interrupt their daily life. In these cases, treatment may be issued in the form of HRT.
There are a number of different options when it comes to hormone replacement therapy, and which one you use depends mostly on which stage of the menopause you’re currently experiencing; and whether or not you have had a hysterectomy which involved removal of the womb.
Kliovance is a combined, continuous form of therapy. This is generally used to treat symptoms in women who have not had an operation to remove part of the womb, and are postmenopausal (or, who have not had a periodic bleed for at least one year). The functioning constituents of the drug are estradiol and norethisterone, which are synthetic versions of oestrogen and progesterone. The former supplements falling levels of oestrogen; whereas the latter is provided as a balancing component. Women who have not had surgery to remove the womb may see their risk of endometrial cancer increase when using oestrogen replacement. A progestogen is thereby supplied to curb this risk, and keep levels of oestrogen in the body under control.
