Nuvelle Continuous is a combined hormone replacement therapy manufactured by Bayer. It is supplied in the form of a pill. This is taken every day, and helps to treat symptoms associated with the menopause. It should only be used by those who have not had a natural period for one year or more.
The menopause is a natural part of the ageing process, and can go on for a number of years. Most women will experience it during their late 40s, or their early 50s. It occurs when menstruation begins to draw to a close, meaning that: the ovaries no longer produce an egg each month; and the layering up and shedding of the womb lining becomes less frequent, before it completely stops.
During this time, levels of certain hormones in the body naturally drop. When the presence of oestrogen falls, emotional and physical symptoms can result. These may include vaginal dryness, and consequently, feelings of pain during sex. Headaches are another common symptom, as are night sweats and hot flushes, and difficulty sleeping. Many women undergoing the menopause may also find that their mood tends to change more quickly than normal.
In the majority of instances, these symptoms will not be prominent enough to necessitate treatment. But other cases may be more severe, with these effects causing significant disruption to everyday life. Hormone replacement therapy can help to restore oestrogen levels, and alleviate symptoms.
The active ingredients in Nuvelle Continuous are estradiol and norethisterone. These are synthetic variants of the hormones oestrogen and progesterone. Whereas estradiol, by working in the same way as oestrogen, supplements levels of this hormone in the body; the role of norethisterone in this drug is help maintain a hormonal balance. In certain cases where oestrogen levels are allowed to rise unopposed, the lining of the uterus can thicken to a point where it may prove to be increasingly susceptible to cancer. Norethisterone provides hormonal equilibrium in the body, thus keeping oestrogen levels from rising too high and reducing this risk.
Please note we only supply this treatment on a renewal basis to patients already taking it. See your GP if you think you may be experiencing symptoms of the menopause, and have not spoken to anyone about these before. Your doctor will be able to help you determine a suitable course of treatment, and issue a prescription where needed.
