Product information

What is Brintellix?

Brintellix is an antidepressant prescribed to treat major depressive episodes in adults. It can be taken for as long as your prescribing clinician advises treatment, but due to the nature of  treatment for depression, it’s likely that your course of treatment will be for at least six months.

How does Brintellix work?

Brintellix works by preventing neurotransmitter receptors from reabsorbing the feel-good chemical serotonin, and thereby increasing the amount of it in the brain.

Brintellix and depression

It is common for all of us to feel low sometimes, but with depression low mood is more prolonged, and may last for many months at a time. Symptoms of depression present differently from person to person, but common signs include sadness, a feeling of hopelessness, a loss of interest in things you once enjoyed, tearfulness, fatigue, a loss of libido, decreased appetite, high levels of anxiety and various aches and pains.

Depression may be triggered by a number of causes, such as the loss of a partner, or job. In some cases however, there seems to be no identifiable reason as to why depression occurs. It’s also thought that the condition may run in families.

Treatment for depression usually falls into three areas: lifestyle changes, medication and therapy. Lifestyle changes may involve exercise and a focus on enjoyable hobbies and pursuits. Medication may depend on the symptoms of your depression, and your response to the treatment. Other antidepressant medications include Escitalopram and Seroxat. Talking therapies include CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy), which involves learning to interpret your thoughts in a more positive way.
