Product information

Elavil belongs to a group of medications known as tricyclic antidepressants. These drugs can be prescribed for a number of conditions, including depression, neuropathic pain and migraines. It may also be prescribed to treat bed wetting in children aged six and above.

What is depression?

Depression is a common mental health condition in the UK, with one in four adults experiencing some form of mental health issue at some pointing their lives. Unlike a general low mood, which is a part of the natural ups and downs of life, depression can be a prolonged and severe experience. Symptoms include a feeling of hopelessness, a lack of motivation and no longer finding pleasure in things you once enjoyed. In more severe cases, it can lead to self-harm and suicidal thoughts. Treatment for depression can include medications (such as the various forms of antidepressants), talking therapies (such as cognitive behavioural therapy) and lifestyle changes, with a combination of these being highly effective for even the most severe of cases.

What is neuropathic pain?

Neuropathic pain relates to pain resulting from the nerves in the body. Symptoms include a shooting, burning or stabbing ache or pain that can often feel like an electric shock. It can have many causes including diabetes, multiple sclerosis, HIV, chemotherapy, cancer, alcoholism and previous infections. Treatment will mean discovering the underlying cause of the pain and treating this. Traditional painkillers like paracetamol are thought to have little effect in managing symptoms. Antidepressants, such as Elavil, have been shown to be effective in the treatment of neuropathic pain, with the SNRI antidepressant Duloxetine found to be more effective for some.

What are migraines?

Migraines are described as a severe headache that typically appears on one side of the head and presents with many other symptoms, including auras (seeing flashing lights), sensitivity to light or sound and nausea and vomiting. Over the counter painkillers, such as paracetamol or ibuprofen, are often ineffective in treating migraines, so other medications more likely to be prescribed. Migraines are often triggered by influences like food or stressful situations, so managing these can be one of the most effective methods of controlling the symptoms. Elavil may be prescribed to treat recurring migraines in the longer term.

How does Elavil work?

Elavil works by affecting the nerves of the spinal cord and brain. For depression, this also includes the modifying of the “feel-good” chemicals serotonin and noradrenaline, the depletion of which can lead to depressive episodes. It is not fully understood how Elavil manages the pain associated with neuropathic pain and migraines, but it is not thought to be related to depression. The most likely action that benefits these conditions is the interfering of nerve signals relating to the brain and spinal cord.
