Migraines are particularly severe headaches, which can often be so painful that they may affect your judgment, or impede movement. When a migraine is underway, it can be very difficult in some cases for the person experiencing it to perform basic tasks. Around six to eight per cent of males get them, but they are even more common in women. It is thought that they affect as many as 20 per cent of women in the UK.
Many cases of migraine (but not all) will be preceded by something called ‘aura’.
The symptoms of aura include seeing flashing, zig-zag lines or black patches, a heightened sensitivity to noise and light, and altered sensations, such as numbness, in one hand, which may travel up the arm and to the face. These usually occur before a migraine headache begins, and are referred to by some as ‘warning signs’.
Some people may experience no aura beforehand; whereas others may get symptoms of aura, but no headache. This is called silent migraine.
Why the condition occurs in some people and not others isn’t fully understood. However, experts posit that you are more likely to experience migraines if you have a family history of them. Symptoms tend to come about in response to a trigger, which can vary from one individual to another.
These can be emotional, physical, dietary or environmental in nature. For instance, feelings of stress might act as a trigger, as might a lack of sleep, or a missed meal. Some people get attacks following the consumption of alcohol or caffeine, or after being in a stuffy environment for too long.
At present, there is no cure for migraines. Those who get them are likely to experience recurrent episodes, particularly if they are susceptible to triggers which are difficult to avoid.
Treatment aims at reducing the severity of migraines; and for some, over-the-counter painkillers are a sufficient means of doing this. However, many people may find that this type of medication does not alleviate symptoms, and require more specialised treatment.
Prescription drugs for migraines are available in the form of tryptamine-based drugs, also known as triptans. As well as easing the effects of a painful headache, they can help to curb associated symptoms such as feelings of sickness, and reduce visual disturbances and hearing problems.
In the brain, various activities involving chemical reactions and neurotransmitters are taking place all the time. For people with migraines, these activities can lead to the inflammation and widening of blood vessels around the brain. This then results in pain, often one side of the head, or in the cranial region. Triptans mimic the function of serotonin in the brain, by working on certain receptors. In doing this, they help to narrow the offending blood vessels, and lessen symptoms.
The migraine products available to buy online from our UK-based pharmacy include Zolmitriptan, Imigran Nasal Spray, Zomig Nasal Spray and Sumatriptan.

Types of Treatment
In milder cases, over-the-counter relief such as ibuprofen or paracetamol can produce positive results in reducing symptoms. However, these non-prescription solutions do not always suffice, and many people will require a more targeted course of treatment. This is more typically issued in the form of triptans, such as Sumatriptan, Imigran Nasal Spray, Zomig Nasal Spray or Zolmitriptan Orodispersible tablets.
How do they work?
Migraines are the result of certain chemical reactions in the brain, which cause surrounding blood vessels to become inflamed and dilate. Triptans, or tryptamine-based medicines, work by stimulating certain receptors in the brain, and facilitating the reversal of this dilation. This causes the blood vessels to contract and eases symptoms.
What are the side effects?
The more common side effects of triptans include dry mouth, altered sense of taste, and drowsiness. Refer to the relevant product page for more detailed information.
Can I take them with other medications?
This kind of treatment may not be safe to take in conjunction with certain products, such as other migraine drugs, antidepressants, or quinolone antibiotics. Make sure you inform your prescriber if you are taking these or any other non-prescription, non-prescription or remedial products before use.

What’s the difference between the medications?
All the treatments we offer for migraine are designed to be taken when an attack is beginning or in progress. They are not to be used as preventative drugs.
The products mainly differ in their mode of application, and their content: Sumatriptan is a generic standard tablet, containing an ingredient of the same name; Zolmitriptan, also a generic drug, is an orodispersible tablet which dissolves in the mouth; whereas Zomig (branded Zolmitriptan) and Imigran (a brand of Sumatriptan) are both issued as nasal solutions. These are both supplied in a pre-loaded applicator and sprayed into one nostril.
Should I take Sumatriptan, Zolmitriptan, Imigran Nasal Spray or Zomig Nasal Spray?
It really depends on what your GP has recommended, as well as your preferred method of administration. Tablets may be preferable to those who don’t like using nasal sprays, and vice versa; similarly, if you have trouble swallowing whole tablets, you may opt for the orodispersible pill.
If you haven’t used migraine treatment before, we advise that you see your GP in person.
Are there different side effects?
The more common side effects are mostly concurrent across each of these products, and include drowsiness, flushing, or tenderness in the fingers and toes. However, there may be small variations according to the delivery method you choose. For instance, the nasal spray may cause side effects which the tablets do not, and so on. You can find out more by referring to the respective product pages.
