Product information

Imigran is a migraine treatment made by GlaxoSmithKline. It is available as a nasally administered spray (Imigran Nasal Spray), and as a tablet (Imigran Radis). Imigran helps to alleviate symptoms associated with migraine such as severe headache, oversensitivity to noise and light, and feelings of nausea and vomiting.

  1. Effective drug for migraine

  2. Nasal spray or tablet available

  3. Branded GSK medication

Migraines affect around one in five women and one in fifteen men in the UK. People who have migraines will typically experience an attack after coming into contact certain triggers. This might be the consumption of a certain food, tiredness, lack of sleep, or stress. Some people might also experience migraines after consuming alcohol or caffeine.

The most common characteristic of a migraine is a throbbing, severe headache. Which symptoms this is accompanied by depends on which type of migraine you have. For instance, migraine with aura may present additional symptoms before the arrival of a headache. These include visual problems, such as the appearance of dark patches and flashing lines in the form of zig-zags; as well as a reduced ability to tolerate loud noises.

Some people may not get aura, and experience a severe headache right away. Others may get silent migraines, which involve all the warning signs associated with aura, without the presence of an actual headache.

It isn’t fully understood why some people are more prone to migraines than others, but as with most conditions, hereditary genes are thought to play a part; meaning that you may be more likely to experience migraines if you have a family history of them.

Over-the-counter painkillers are the first port of call for many when a migraine attack starts, but this may not prove effective for everyone. Tryptamine-based drugs (or triptans) may be necessary in some cases. Sumatriptan, the functioning agent in Imigran Nasal Spray and Imigran Radis, belongs to this class of treatments.

Migraines are the result of inflamed blood vessels around the brain. When this inflammation occurs, these blood vessels widen, and this causes pain and other symptoms. Medication in the triptan category works by reducing the widening of these blood vessels, and they do this by stimulating serotonin receptors in the brain. This helps to ease pain and other symptoms.

If you haven’t used migraine treatment before or are experiencing migraine symptoms for the first time, we would advise that you see your doctor in person. They will be able to help you find the right treatment, and initiate a prescription where suitable.

We’ve made it simple to renew your prescription and buy Imigran online. Take our questionnaire to begin your consultation, and our GMC-registered doctor will review your answers. Once your treatment has been confirmed as suitable, an e-prescription will be issued and sent to our pharmacy to be dispensed. Orders are shipped by tracked next-day courier, so you can expect to receive it in one working day.

Follow the directions issued by your prescriber when using this treatment, and read the instructions supplied in the patient information leaflet fully. Doing this will help you to limit the risk of possible side effects, and maximise the efficacy of the treatment.

For Imigran Nasal Spray:

  1. Administer as directed.
  2. This is one application of the nasal spray, into one nostril, when you first notice symptoms of a migraine.
  3. Please note that it is not a preventative treatment.
  4. Do not use more than one spray in any one 24-hour period, or exceed the prescribed dose.
  5. In the event that symptoms return after you have taken a dose, you may apply another if at least two hours have passed since your last administration.

For Imigran Radis:

  1. Use as prescribed.
  2. You should try to take one tablet with water as soon as you believe an attack is coming. However, if you take your tablet later it should still be effective.
  3. Do not take a tablet to prevent a migraine. It should only be taken when you begin to experience symptoms.
  4. You should only take one tablet for each attack.
  5. If you have another migraine within a 24 hour period, you can take another tablet as long as at least two hours have passed since you took your last one.
  6. A daily dose (taken over a 24-hour period) should not exceed 300mg.
  7. You should not take Imigran Radis is you are under 18 or over 65.

Please note that these do not constitute comprehensive directions, and that you will need to read those supplied in the patient information leaflet prior to use.
