Product information

Maxalt melts are a tryptamine-based painkiller containing the active ingredient rizatriptan, made by Organon. A 5HT agonist, the tablets and wafers work on serotonin receptors in the brain to reduce swelling in blood vessels. In doing so, they lessen the symptoms of migraine.

Everyone gets headaches from time to time, but migraines are different. They aren’t as common as headaches but still affect roughly 6% percent of men and 20% of women. They can be distressing, exhausting, and a hindrance to day to day life. The main characteristic of a migraine is a pounding headache in one particular area of the head (be it the front or the side), but people also experience fatigue, nausea, vomiting and increased sensory sensitivity.

Although the exact causes of migraines are yet to be fully understood, there are a myriad of triggers known to bring on an attack. These include dehydration, anxiety, certain foods or alcohol, or sitting in front of computer screens for long periods. ‘Weekend migraines’ are commonly reported as people sleep in, reduce their caffeine intake and their stress levels decline. Postmenopausal women are also particularly prone to attacks.

Up to a third of people who have migraines experience aura, a series of neurological sensations which precede headache. These can encompass visual disturbances such as tunnel vision, blind spots and patterns seen before the eyes, as well as sensations of vertigo, dizziness or pins and needles. In some instances the aura will not be followed by a migraine headache (this is referred to as silent migraine).

While many people find that their migraines can be adequately managed with over the counter medicines, some find their symptoms more severe and require the assistance of prescription medication. Maxalt melts are one of these treatments, and you can buy them online from our UK pharmacy.

Maxalt melts have rizatriptan as its active ingredient. It is a serotonin agonist, which emulates the effect of serotonin on the receptors in the brain. This causes the swollen blood vessels that induce migraine headache to return to their normal size. The tablets melt in the mouth, which helps to subvert the nauseous feeling some people get when taking tablets whole with liquids.

We offer prescriptions for migraine treatments on a renewal basis only. Those who develop new migraine symptoms or who have never previously taken medication should see their GP in person.

It only takes a few moments to buy or renew your prescription to Maxalt Melts online. If your order is authorised it will be dispensed at our GPhC-registered pharmacy and shipped directly to you by tracked courier.

Read the instruction leaflet in full before taking this medicine and be sure to follow any special instructions given to you by your prescriber closely. This is the best way to get the most from your medication and minimise the chances of side effects.

  1. Take as directed.
  2. You should only take a Maxalt Melt tablet once the headache phase of the migraine has begun. Tablets taken during the aura phase will not prevent a headache.
  3. Take one 10mg tablet as soon as possible after the start of your migraine headache.
  4. Make sure your hands are dry before opening the blister pack.
  5. The tablets will melt on the tongue and do not need to be swallowed with liquid.
  6. They are best taken on an empty stomach, as a full stomach could delay the effectiveness of the medicine.
  7. Should your symptoms not improve after your first dose, do not take another one for the same attack.
  8. If you have more than one migraine in 24 hours, you can take another tablet as long as at least two hours have passed since your last dose.
  9. You should not take more than two doses in the space of 24 hours.
  10. This treatment is not suitable for the prevention of migraines.
  11. If you take more Maxalt Melts than you should, see a doctor immediately and take the pack with you.
  12. This product is not suitable for use in children under 18.

These directions are included here as an overview. You should consult the patient information leaflet for a more detailed set of instructions.
