Zomig Nasal Spray is a medication made by Grunenthal, used in migraines. In addition to relieving headache pain which migraines often cause, it can also help to reduce feelings of sickness and visual problems. Taken during the onset of symptoms, it provides a viable alternative for those who prefer not to use tablets, and gets to work immediately.
Estimates suggest that as many as one in five women and one in fifteen men in the UK experience migraines. Why some people get them and others do not isn’t fully understood, although many doctors speculate that genes are a contributing factor. Some people think that a migraine attack is just a really bad headache, when in actual fact they can be much more debilitating.
Migraines fall into three main categories: migraine with aura; without aura; and silent migraine. Those who experience aura will usually get warning signs before their headache takes hold. Sight problems, hearing problems and feelings of sickness are common characteristics in these cases. People who have migraines without aura will usually bypass these symptoms, and the first thing they’ll notice is an intense throbbing head pain. Silent cases are those where a person displays signs of aura, but does not get a headache.
The aim of treatment is to alleviate pain and limit the severity of other symptoms. Some may find that over-the-counter painkillers help; but others may require more specific solutions, geared particularly to the medication of migraines.
Zolmitriptan, which is the working ingredient in Zomig Nasal Spray, is an example of a triptan, or tryptamine-based drug. It is a 5HT agonist, which means that it works on serotonin receptors in the brain. A migraine occurs when blood vessels around the brain swell, and exert pressure. The action of zolmitriptan causes these blood vessels to narrow, and this helps to soothe pressure and relieve symptoms.
