Nystan is an antifungal medicine, made by Bristol Myers Squibb. It contains a functioning agent which is used to treat oral thrush. The treatment is an oral suspension which targets and kills off the cells of the infecting fungi.
Oral thrush is caused by excessive production of the yeast bacteria called Candida. This particular yeast usually lives unnoticed on the skin and in the mouth of most people. In normal circumstances the body’s natural defences keep the fungus at a manageable level.
Certain triggers or situations can stimulate the irregular growth of Candida, resulting in an upset of the body’s delicate balance and unpleasant symptoms. Mouth infection symptoms include white lesions inside the mouth which can be painful and sometimes bleed. Some people experience an unpleasant or loss of taste, redness, cracks at the corner of the mouth, or a painful burning sensation and sometimes it may be difficult to eat and drink.
There can be several contributing factors which result in Candida multiplying and causing an oral infection. These include prolonged or repeated use of oral antibiotics, inhaled medicines for asthma and COPD, smoking, dentures, contraceptive pill, poor oral hygiene and diabetes. Mouth infections can usually be avoided by maintaining a good level of oral hygiene.
To effectively combat a fungal mouth infection antifungal antibiotics are usually prescribed. Nystan oral suspension is favourable because it is applied directly to the infection so that it can get to work as quickly as possible. The active ingredient, nystatin, works by inhibiting the production of ergosterol, an essential agent in order for the fungus to continue to multiply. This then weakens the structure of the fungal cell, which allows unwanted substances to enter and kill off the infection.

How to use Nystan

- Take Nystan as directed by your prescriber.
- For mouth infections, the treatment should be used after eating.
- The suspension should be held in the mouth, coating the infected area for as long as possible, before swallowing.
- It is important to continue taking the medicine for the period specified by your prescriber, unless they tell you otherwise. This will help to ensure that the infection does not return.
