What is Fosavance?

Fosavance contains two active ingredients, alendronic acid and colecalciferol, in order to treat osteoporosis and prevent vitamin D deficiency.

How does Fosavance work?

Alendronate, one of the active ingredients in Fosavance, is from the group of medicines known as bisphosphonates. It is effective at preventing and treating osteoporosis. It helps to slow down the production of osteoblast cells, which break down bone cells. This allows the body to strengthen existing bone or prevent further thinning.

Osteoporosis is a common bone condition where the bone loses its density and becomes prone to breaks and fractures. There can be a number of reasons for osteoporosis to develop including your age, abnormal hormone levels and as a side effect to some medication. In women, the menopause is the main contributing factor in osteoporosis. During the menopause the female reproductive system stops producing oestrogen, a hormone used to keep bones healthy.

Vitamin D deficiency occurs when your body does not have sufficient vitamin D levels. Our main source of vitamin D comes from the skin’s exposure to summer sunlight. As we get older our skin is not able to produce the same levels of vitamin D and so a deficiency may occur. Vitamin D helps our body to absorb calcium which is essential to maintain good bone health. A severe deficiency can lead to muscle weakness and thereby result in more falls and potentially more bone fractures.

You may be at risk of osteoporosis if you have experienced bone breakages, back pain, stooped posture or reduced height. Osteoporosis is diagnosed through a bone density test known as a DEXA scan. Vitamin D deficiency can be confirmed by a blood test.
